I read this book in elementary school, so the time frame of when I would’ve read this is in between 2010-2015. I don’t remember a lot but there’s an adolescent boy who gets bullied often for being “different”, liking art, and having long hair; Often is bullied for looking like a girl, and has rough home life from what I can remember. He loves drawing and one day goes into the forest across from the railroad tracks in his town, where he finds a hollow tree. He finds that he can’t climb up this tree and eventually makes it a hideaway for himself where he spends all of his time and even falls asleep in at one point. The middle is pretty fuzzy but I know that eventually his bullies find him in this forest and beat him up badly and even cut his hair:( I remember the scene of him coming home and his mom freaking out. At some point he also meets a very mysterious old man who I remember thinking is like “the spirit of the forest” and this old man kind of helps him as a mentor in a way. I also remember the cover having a close up of his eye with leaves around it. If I remember more I will post it but please help if this sounds even remotely familiar!!! I’m going crazy!!
