Vasyl Kazmirchuk | 17 comments I’ve been reflecting on this while writing about characters who face darkness not only outside, but also within themselves.
At what point does our silence stop being compassion — and start being complicity?

Yep now that's a good question. I have been thinking about it too and perhaps the best answer I have discovered so far is from a forgotten quote - something like no person should expect more tolerance for themselves and what is important to them than the tolerance that they show to others. It fits with the Golden Rule of treating others like yourself in their situation and it avoids the danger of being too tolerant and allowing evil free reign. Of course we must not forget, as Nietzsche said in 'staring into the abyss', to not become the evil we fear in our own intolerance of others intolerance. So we must protect all involved from harm as we help educate people to see the value of sharing and living and let live in peace. It is easier said than done but at least it seems to make some sense. Just my two cents worth. By the way just noticed the two books you have written. Congrats - that's no easy task. I look forward to reading them and have added them to my ever growing to read list. Cheers and best wishes! Ben

Vasyl Kazmirchuk | 17 comments Thank you, Ben — I truly appreciate your thoughtful words. You’re absolutely right about the danger of becoming what we oppose. It’s a delicate balance: to stand against evil without losing compassion. I really like your reference to the Golden Rule — it’s something the world seems to need now more than ever.

Vasyl Kazmirchuk | 17 comments Maybe that’s why we write — not to be remembered, but to remember ourselves while we still can.
Every story is a small act of defiance against oblivion.
Silence may cover us one day, but words — even whispered — carry the proof that we were here.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts in this thread.
Every comment here felt like a quiet echo of that same question: what does it mean to be truly alive?

I’m grateful for this conversation — it reminded me why I wrote Be Not Afraid. Not to preach, but to listen.
