I'm thinking The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann or Paladin's Strength by Tamara Kingfisher. But if they do fit a prompt and I've overlooked it, do let me know!

Ah, thank you. I have something else earmarked for that one, but that's okay. I had already pre-ordered a new edition of The Magic Mountain before the list came out, and it's over 1000 pages, so I'll be happy if I can use this prompt to reward the time it will take me to read that!
