If you read this and find it mostly a bummer I would recommend the next two books in the series they are much more upbeat.

Yep. This was her debut novel and the only one from Louis' perspective. Most of the rest are from the perspective of Lestat. The second novel, The Vampire Lestat, became my favorite when it was released and has remained my favorite in the series ever since.
Tale of the Body Thief (the 4th novel) is also very good. My favorite is Queen of the Damned.
The actress from the Queen of the Damned movie Aaliyah died before it was released.

It’s interesting to see authors level up their work like that.
