Children's book about spreading anger then joy is spread. Read in 1970's.

Hello, I read it in the 1970's. Something upsetting happens to the family member...maybe the dad? and then he take sit out on his wife, who takes it out on her son and the bad mood is passed along. The boy is anger at his dog, but the dog responds with happiness. The boy brings the joy to his mom and his mom back to the dad. The theme is about spreading love not hate. I think Maurice Sendak illustrated, but not sure.
