Elementary age Thriller book Plot is a girl that hears crying at night outside her window and sees another girl crying looking for a lost locket by a tree. Read around 1985-1986. Spoiler.

I read this book around 1985/1986. The cover illustration is that of 2 children walking towards a 2 story victorian style house, with a lightning bolt coming down because it was stormy, a tree to the side of the house. From what I remember, these kids went to this house for a small vacation. Inside the entrance towards the stairs is a huge portrait of a beautiful young girl, who ended up dying when she was young, maybe 20s. The girl that is visiting hears crying during the stormy night and looks out the window and sees a girl digging in the ground looking for something. it is the ghost of the girl in the portrait and she is looking for a locket that her boyfriend had given her before he left to serve in the army (I think). The the ghost takes over the girl and ends up in a pond nearby, where she sees her long lost love. The boy in the book saves her life and pulls her out of the pond and the ghosts of the girl in the portrait and her love are finally together.
