Some people count to ten to wake up from a nightmare. Dolores always counts the bones of her head sphenoid, frontal, lacrimal. But no matter how many times she counts them, it doesn’t change the fact that her father is missing, that his final words of warning to her were to trust no one, and that now, the rest of her family is giving Dolores a chilling welcome. With Halloween fast approaching, Dolores must face the past she left behind before it’s too late.

Okay, so I don't have any guesses!

It must be terrible to have been attacked by someone you liked and dated and now everyone is talking like they were this happy couple. I hate that Charlotte had her hide what Jacob did. and wow, Dolores's scar - I hope that terrible doctor didn't do something more!! Why did they have to fully operate? something seems off here. . .

and wow, the dad missing. I'm not sure what to make of it. It really does sound like he's off hiding somewhere but I don't know why he'd need to lure Dolores back here. . .and we don't know his secrets yet - what would make her view him differently. hopefully they will come out soon.

I didn't get any code or hint out of the note but it must be another scavenger hunt, right? hmmm. . .I love mysteries! And what was going on with the lemon slices (2)? and why was his car downtown??

and wow, the doctor was killed too. I hate how they are both tied to Dolores but, of course, in a small town - they are tied to many

I wonder what Kate Butcher's problem was.
and ugh, Paul sucks. I like Wyatt so far.

Not sure what to make of Asher and Josie - but we do know Josie was home alone when her father was already gone. . . hopefully there isn't more here. . .

I was so surprised her dad hid it all but I'm sure Charlotte was there to make it all seem so reasonable.
I agree, it's easy for her to make her father appear perfect but her father definitely had some to do with it.
crazy it all came down to a hired hitman and the little brother.

I was really glad she got to confront Teddy and tell Jacob. I agree, I can't imagine getting over something like that and trying to have a relationship. but I was glad that Delores seemed like she was getting back on her feet and getting a relationship with siblings!
and Kate was in a good spot too

and I do love that the cats were mentioned more towards the end but I still think the cover is an odd choice. It made me think the story was going to be YA horror and it definitely wasn't that! lol (hide spoiler)]

Also lo e that Dolores is a pathologist and interested to learn more about her fsmily and the 'Halloween' town they live in. Very sad to hear she was raped as a teen and that it was covered up. I thought it was YA Horror as well 🤣 it's definitely not the story I was expecting, but I'm really into it. One of my favorite tropes is (view spoiler)[when a character returns to their hometown after a long time away and ends up digging into a mystery from their past, and this one has both a past a d present mystery that are obviously connected somehow... Ok the last half of the book, I was just consumed by and it just flew by...The thing that I was disappointed in but fit in this story...(view spoiler)[no way would the FBI allow a family member to have any involvement in the case, no matter if the town had lost their coroner. Yeah, they did mention that in the story, did you notice that? And the character, I can't remember which one, probably (view spoiler)[Wyatt as an excuse, said it was the only way to get her not to leave town, but I think it was because he wanted to work alongside her so he could be there front row when she figured it out. Agents in the field would be able to get away with certain things for a short period of time anyway without any direct, hands on oversight from superiors.
