M. A. Evans (maevans) | 1 comments Hello all! Kindly excuse my audacity in starting a new topic the day I joined, but I'm simply gleeful that I came across this group. Everyone who knows me can attest to how very much I dislike this adaptation.

Anyway, I was wondering what you all thought of their portrayal of Colonel Fitzwilliam. I admit, my memory of the film is getting a bit fuzzy, but I remember being absolutely dismayed by the actor and the acting. The first time I read P&P (and every time after) I've really liked the colonel, and felt he was someone who really liked (and was liked in return) by both Darcy and Elizabeth. Yet it felt like in the 2005 film that they were terrified of making him at all likeable.

Any thoughts?

Sam | 19 comments I don't remember him much...he wasn't a big character, but I do remember not liking him. They downplayed him, I thought. I liked him very much in the '95 version...he was very well done in that, I thought. :D Friendly, laughing...he was like the opposite of Darcy. :D

Sam | 19 comments (Who is he in Our Mutual Friend?
The "nice" Fitzwilliam from the '95 version is also in the period film "Lorna Doone", and he was fabulous in that as well. :D I just like that actor! :D)

Kimba | 4 comments Oh I SO agree! Col. Fitzwilliam is a character that I've always wished Jane Austen had actually done more with because you can't help but like him! He's that highly personable, charming, FUN guy that guys love to hang out with and ladies can't help but adore. To downplay him & dismiss him was, yet again, another horror of the '05 atrocity.
