Best new read Arrogance and inheritance by Clarissa Joy Thomas or Green card by Elizabeth Adams.

101) Good men are scarce - 4 stars - Audio version

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
102) His secret betrothal - Renee McKenzie - 4 stars - Relisten
Fairly angst free story, the bit there is a stupid misunderstanding
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
103) Against every expectation - Paige Badgett - 4 stars - audio version
A little too much angst for my taste and a Darcy that doesn't fight hard enough for Elizabeth

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
104) A spirited exchange - Jessice L Jackson - 3.75 stars - re listen

110) A royal disposition - Amy Cecil - 3.5 stars - audio version

Super job skating along from Colonel Brandon's to Emma Watson's.

Your finished list reminds me of so many that I still have on the stack to read. Glad you mostly enjoyed them.

message 72: by Craftyhj (new)

Craftyhj | 292 comments Colonel Brandon - I am so happy to settle into your library. I think this may well be my final location for the year as you have many lovely books for me to read.

101) Oh Crumbs by Kathryn Freeman - 4*.

A light read with gentle nudges towards Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This is an Austen inspired modern novel for those who fan something a little different for a change.

102) If I Loved You Less by Noelle Adams - 3.5*.

A modern Emma variation, this is the second in a trilogy of modern Austen variations. This modernisation is generally done very well indeed. The characters and situations which do not translate well into the 21st century are very sensibly left out.

This does have clear and considerable mature content.

103) The Mistress of Longbourn by Jann Rowland - 4* (audio)

I have previously read this book and I would say that I definitely prefer the book to the audio in this instance.

104) Look on the Heart: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by M.J. Stratton - 4*.

This author has firmly established herself within this genre and is becoming well appreciated for her willingness to write variations which push the boundaries just a little whilst remaining authentic.

I very much enjoyed this variation and felt that the characters were generally true to form as well as true to their changed circumstances. The writing is smooth and the story flows well.

There were a couple of minor continuity errors but these did not diminish from the reading experience.

105) The Mysteries of Pemberley by Amy D'Orazio - 5* (audio)

I read this when it first came out and generally enjoyed the audio version. This was a new narrator to me and whilst I enjoyed much of it and thought his accent was generally pretty good I did find his mispronunciation of Derbyshire and Hertfordshire very trying by the end.

Nonetheless this is an excellent plot and I would freely recommend it.

106) Jane Austen's Remarkable Aunt, Philadelphia Hancock: A Girl of Genius and Feeling' by Jan Merriman - 3.25*.

Interesting but somewhat dry.

Well, if you have to settle in for several months, Colonel Brandon would be an agreeable host! :)

I am looking forward to the MJ Stratton you mentioned.

message 74: by Craftyhj (new)

Craftyhj | 292 comments Another interesting reading month spent with the Colonel,

107)Requirements for Love: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Heather Moll - 5*.

A light and pleasing variation. I know I will not be disappointed when a new Heather Moll variation is released and this one was no exception.

108) A Life Diverted: A Pride & Prejudice Vagary by Shana Granderson A Lady - 2*

When I read a book by this author I go into them with my eyes wide open. I know there will be drama and OTT behaviour and assumptions and I know the writing will not be great. Sometimes a little bit of escapism is what is required. This one is no exception; except there isn't really any drama, or anything much at all.

109) His Frozen Heart: A Pride & Prejudice Novella by Christie Capps - 3.75* (audio)

Short and sweet, this is a very quick read with key elements of the canon story viewed from the Darcy viewpoint. As with all work from this author the writing is clear and well edited with a steady and smooth flow.

110) A More Agreeable Man: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jan Ashton - 4* (audio)

This is a very interesting new plot line which has been well executed. The cast list is kept appropriate for a novella and there are no distracting side plots to take the reader's mind away from the main story. The usual misunderstandings between Darcy and Elizabeth are replaced by a common interest in getting to the bottom of the actions of that rascal Wickham. This makes for an enjoyable low angst story which is to be recommended.

111) Best Friends Backups & Something More by Ranee S. Clark - 3* (audio)

A sweet, quick read with a gentle nudge in the direction of Sense and Sensibility. The characters are pleasant and realistic but it was over a bit too fast. This is the first in a series and there is clear setting up of the subsequent stories in this one. This did distract a little I found as it meant there were plot paths which didn't really seem to lead anywhere.

112) Disarmed: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jo Abbott - 4.5*

This was excellent fun from start to finish. The characters are engaging and Lydia is a hoot.

113) A Golden Opportunity: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by J. Marie Croft - 5* (Audio)

This is a delightful feel-good book which is low on angst but definitely not low on intrigue and romance.

Darcy is in a decidedly romantic mood as he seeks to prove to the charming Elizabeth Bennet that he is so much better than his proposal indicated. At the same time he is trying to understand what has got into is normally mousy and predictable cousin Anne de Bourgh. With Lady Catherine to contend with too the poor man is quite perplexed and tongue-tied most of the time and even his reputed love of long words seems to escape him. The women in his life are not making things easy for him.

114) Mrs Bennet Makes a Match: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Lucy Marin - 4* (audio)

This is a quick and very satisfying book with plenty of humour and just a pinch of gentle angst. This portrayal of Mrs Bennet is very much as I imagine her from the writings of Austen, generally well-meaning but easily confused. Poor Mr Darcy didn't have a chance once she was on his case but thankfully he didn't want one!

115) Mansfield Restored: Miss Crawford's Return by Ronald McGowan - 4.25*

I enjoyed this one very much indeed. The witty writing was suitably Austenesque as well as the deliciously snippy comments at times. Mrs Price was a hoot as was little Betsey. The characters of Mary and William were very well developed indeed.

116) Undeceived: Pride & Prejudice in the Spy Game by Karen M. Cox - 5* (audio)

This was a re-listen to one of the first modern books I braved. I loved it the first time and I loved it just as much this time.

117) Faults of Understanding by Jennifer Altman - 4.5* (audio)

This was a very enjoyable story which successfully relied on the writers skill rather than too many frills to move the plot forward. The cast list is small with the overwhelming majority of the story spent with Elizabeth and Darcy.

118) Lord Longbourn's Daughter: A Pride and Prejudice variation by Elin Eriksen 4*.

A very well executed and edited story - these are both to be expected from a very talented and careful writer. I very much appreciate the commitment to professionalism and the respect that this shows to the readers. This is not to be underestimated as too many authors in this genre do not take this much care.

119) Shadows of the Past: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by M.J. Stratton - 3.5*

A good read but not a great read for me.

120) The Marriage Bargain: A Variation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by Lucy Marin - 5* (Audio)

A powerful exploration of resentment and reserve

121) A Maid of No Consequence: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Lucy C Milton - 4*

This debut novel is very well planned and written and I commend the author for coming up with such an unusual idea and then executing it very effectively. Well done indeed.

122) Strange Happenings at Longbourn: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by M.J. Stratton - 3*.

There is a very good book here with an interesting plot and well developed characters. However they are buried under far too many words. Endless descriptions of table settings and frocks. Some of this is good but this is a case of over-egging the pudding.

The behaviour of the characters also was a little odd - if you know there is trouble in the house why would they just keep waiting to investigate it properly. We appreciate that Mr Bennet is not the most decisive of characters but this went too far.

I loved the characters of Kitty and Lydia who provided much needed light relief. I also appreciate the dry wit of Mary.

I look forward to anther month of reading with the Colonel.

Craftyhj | 292 comments Another happy month spent with the good Colonel,

123) Loved None But You by Noelle Adams - 3.5*

This is the final part in a modern trilogy based on the novels of Jane Austen. The same group of young women are in each book with a different one as the main focus in each. In this one the focus is on Anne and this is based on "Persuasion".

One of the problems with modern variations can be deciding what to include from the Regency books and what cannot be updated to a modern context. In the original "Persuasion" the separation of the two characters is as a result of family interference. This has been modernised here as college graduates with jobs in different places. This is a common way of modernising but it can fall short with the male character still expecting his woman to drop everything and just follow him. This is the case here for much of the book but I was glad that Anne does call him out in the end.

All in all I enjoyed the book and the wrapping up of the trilogy.

124) Kindly Meant Interference: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Jayne Bamber - 3.5*

What if Caroline Bingley decided to cut her losses and befriend the Bennet sisters? This is a fun premise and I enjoyed the book. The author did a good job of civilising Caroline just enough without losing the true essence of the character. Overall, a fun book but another edit would have tidied it up.

125) Lover's Knot: A Mysterious Pride & Prejudice Variation by Jenetta James - 5* (reread/audio)

A safe author and a very well written book. The plot is excellent and the developing relationships are handled well. I absolutely loved the postscript - masterful!

I have both read and listened to this and recommend either option. The narration is very good.

126) An Angel in her Pocket: A Pride and Prejudice Variation - 3* (audio)

This is a very easy story for a quick read/listen. It leans to the fairytale both in the overall plot and in the way it is executed.

I confess I found the little girl a bit implausible. She is far too advanced for 4 years old. The simplest thing would have been to make her 8. The plot would have been unchanged and I would have found it more plausible by far.

Overall - I liked it but I didn't love it.

127) Dear Mr. Darcy by Sally Johnson - 4*.

I really enjoyed this - there is gentle romance but really it is about two young people struggling to find their way in the world.

I would call this Austen-inspired rather than Austenesque but whatever I call it, I enjoyed it!

128) A Compromised Compromise by Timothy Underwood - 4* (audio)

This is not to be taken seriously - pop your tongue firmly in your cheek and enjoy. This is a laugh-out-loud read for most of the book. Then suddenly it isn't and the change is very dramatic. I defy anyone not to want to give Darcy a good kick to the shins. The angst is short-lived however.

I most appreciate the gentle teasing about the single raised eyebrow. This has become so common in all JAFF that I loved the way the author teased on this little quirk.

129) In Sickness and in Health by Frances Reynolds - 4.5* (reread/audio)

As smallpox sweeps through Meryton lives are changed forever, with heroes made and villains revealed. This book explores both the 'now' of an epidemic and the ramifications in an interesting and engaging fashion. The characters are well defined and the development of friendships and love affairs is delightfully described. I did feel the ending was perhaps a little drawn out

130) Hearts Entwined: A Pride and Prejudice Vagary by Melissa Anne - 3.5*

This author always makes me scream a bit - her plots are very god. but her execution is lacking. More time and care needs to be taken with her work.

This was a generally well written book but the author disappears down too many unnecessary side paths in her writing making the books a little too drawn out and muddled. The language is too modern (e.g. "running interference" which is both modern and exclusively American).

131) An Excellent Walker by Lyndsay Constable - 5* (reread/audio)

This is an extremely well written book which grabs the reader's attention from the very beginning. The author really captures the true Elizabeth in her writing, gently peppering the words with humour and wit even in the trickiest of situations. Darcy is his usual slightly confused and confusing, perplexed and perplexing, self.

The alternative variation of the "Wickham situation" was masterful. An amazingly imaginative alternative and even without the other manifold reasons for reading this book it would be worth it for this scenario alone.

Audiobook review - I found the narration a little disappointing. The narrator's British accent was not great for my British ears and the pronunciations of place names amongst other things were so far off. I think I will stick to the written version next time.

132) Mr. Darcy and the Enchanted Library: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Monica Fairview et. al, - 5*

This was an excellent book from start to finish. The pace is uniformly good and it neither lags nor charges on too frenetically. There are some very engaging original characters as well as a very pared down cast of 'regulars'. There is a good balance of angst and humour; the hermit is a particular delight.

It is at times a little sad but all is ultimately resolved to great satisfaction all round.

133) Some Little Alteration: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jennifer Altman - 4*

This is first and foremost a well written Pride and Prejudice variation. The writing is of a uniformly good quality and the book is well edited.

The plot has a paranormal element to it which brings in just the right amount of angst - poor Elizabeth has quite the shock when she comes to after a bump on the head! And the shocks just keep on coming for a while. There are some delicate touches which keep the reader alert to the alternate reality elements and the plot builds well.

134) When Love is True: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Melissa Anne - 3*

I am not sure why I put myself through it with this author. Well I do really, I love her plots but not her execution of them.

135) For the Deepest Love by Mary Anne Mushatt - 4* (reread/audio)

This story has it all for an Austen fan - intrigue, romance, angst and awesome characters. Life circumstances for the Bennets and the Darcy’s have made them very different people resulting in a very different story.

At times this does perhaps cross the boundaries into the overdramatic but for all that it is a gripping read which will keep the pages turning.

136) Hearts Unspoken by P.O. Dixon - 3.5*

This is a very interesting and unusual Pride and Prejudice variation which has good language and good character development. It was undoubtedly a generally enjoyable read.

I did have a few reservations however which affected my star rating. These mostly related to repeated use of the same plot tool to move the story forward. For example there were a large number of occasions when servants and doctors would just shove their way not a room without knocking or waiting for permission to enter. This did not ring true at all. There was also a repeated writing tactic which rather ruined my reading of the rest of the book. The first time it was used I thought it was excellent but when it was used again it took me right out of the flow. After that, every encounter between Darcy and Elizabeth left me wondering if it would be using the same tactic again.

137) Connections Redux by Harvey S. - 3.5*

Wildly over the top but lots of fun!

138) No Less Resentment: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Nan Harrison - 5* (reread/audio)

This charming book is first and foremost an homage to the Bennet family and to their deep strength of character, both individually and collectively. There is romance and it is strong and truly portrayed but, as in the original, the focus is on the Bennet family, Elizabeth and Mr Bennet in particular.

There is the most glorious set-down by Mr Bennet of some of the local "cats" which I had to go back and read more than once it was so good.

There are a number of original characters in this book, each one carefully constructed and worthy of a place in the book.

I look forward to another month perusing your bookshelves Colonel Brandon.
