Karin | 9316 comments First rule of writing, don't make fun of your readers. Based on the ratings of the few GR friends of mine who have read this, it doesn't bother everyone, but it's not wise, and I don't care if it is the protagonist saying it. If it hadn't been for GR, which is where I find the majority of books I read, I'd probably have never looked at this book twice, but it fit a reading challenge and looked like it would be fun.

First rule of murder mysteries--don't spend far too long getting around to the actual mystery. This book was far more about the publishing industry and other things for a long time--the cover was misleading as well, but as far as I know it's not the author's fault.

The idea was fun, and there was humour in it even though most of the characters border on inane. Sometimes it's fun to have a novel that breaks the fourth wall. But the slight (even if she's trying to be funny, it was something a mean girl or judgemental person would say) was this: she not only dissed Goodreads (called it Meanreads in one of the over 200 footnotes which are part of the story) and those of us who don't feel a need to give 4 or 5 stars to every book we like and who will give lower stars at times, but those who are offended by too much swearing or any swearing. No book worth its salt is liked by everyone, not even some of the most brilliantly written books of all time. There was some gratuitous swearing, but not so much that it would have been a DNF or 2 stars for that alone. I did like the fact that sex was left to the imagination.

ShazM | 487 comments I read this for "Europe" in June and rated it 3 stars, which means okay for me. I must have missed the insult though because I didn't read most of the footnotes!

Yes, it was only in the footnotes, which is probably why others missed it :)
