This is based on the real lives of Robert Louis Stevenson and his amazing wife, Fanny. When they met in 1875, she had already lived in both comfort and squalor, as one of few women in a mining camp. Fed up with her first husband's philandering, she took off for Europe with her children. There a Scotsman 10 years her junior fell madly in love with her. It took much time and effort for her to decide to marry him and get a divorce. They literally lived all over the world, from Colorado to Scotland to Samoa. Stevenson was diagnosed with tuberculosis and Fanny nursed him back to health multiple times. In between, he made his name as a writer of adventure stories for children and adults. Like many brilliant men, he often took his wife for granted and dismissed her own talents. The book is very descriptive, though some sections seemed a bit drawn out.
