If you insist on calling them, take heed: be careful what you ask for, be willing to pay the price.” She leans over Adeline, casting her in shadow. “And no matter how desperate or dire, never pray to the gods that answer after dark.”

Old Estelle tells a young Addie, but in a moment of desperation, she seeks a deal with the devil, not down at the crossroads but deep in the forest at night. Addie longs for freedom, she thinks she has nothing left to lose.

The deal she makes leaves her an ageless vagabond who no one remembers. Until one day and that day will have consequences.

This is a book which should be read without expectations. For somebody who lives 300 years, we do not delve deeply into history and if that is where expectations lie the book will be a disappointment.

It is a book I quite enjoyed and we will see if I continue to think about it.
