Since I already own/have read 5th Wave, I just ordered the sequel. My daughter has read and liked it as well. It's very dark for a teen novel, though, which is what the teens seem to want today. Definitely one of those YA-labeled books that has cross-age appeal :-)
Because there's an alien invasion, and since there's so darned little pickings in the modern Young Adult sci-fi genre ... period ... the Young Adult Pick category has a broader definition than the adult categories. If it has an alien or space theme, I'll allow it for the YA pick (I spell this out both on the YA Listopia, and also in my definitions when I invite the nominations each month).Gotta reward what few authors are writing YA sci-fi that actually -is- sci-fi and not just earthbound dystopia.
It's either that ... or send the kids back to read about the sparkly vampires...
It's a good book. Nice and dark, lots of drama. It's one of those books that has appeal for everyone if you don't mind a young protagonist and no sex :-)
I just finished this and it was a quick fun read. Lots of action and good characters. (view spoiler)

Oh, yea! My kid wants it. Haven't looked for the sequel for a while. Thanks!UPDATE: oh, yeah ... now I remember why I haven't grabbed it yet. It's still hardcover only. Too pricey :-P Was waiting for the paperback to come out :-)
I am listening to book 1. I love how it starts out and have to say the narration is top notch. This is developing into a good one.
Nothing like a good, gory alien invasion to scare the crap out of the kiddos, eh? [*heh-heh ... heh-heh-heh*]
I am currently reading this book and I really like it so far!! I love the plot and the writing, can't wait to finish it and move on to the 2nd book in the series.
It's got just enough dystopic space alien-invasion vibe to lure our younger readers back away from the sparkly vampires ... I hope :-)
I loved this book so much. I loved the plot twists and mysteries that were in this book. I can't wait to read the next book!
today finish listen and was ok but my expectation was low because of alien invasion (events only on the earth) and vampires :D (if think i was reading few first post with one eye closed) and stuck in my head and keep waiting for them but luckily they didn't appear.only good vampires movies ever was Blade and Vampires
Anna wrote: "The movie doesn't sound very promising based on i09"Well, Frankly, I imagined Evan Walker a bit different. You know, because look at Chole and Evan. She looks much younger than he does. But, except for that, I am super excited for the movie, as I loved the book. I need to mention (because You were talking about Sprkly vampires )I am so glad this book is showing aliens as the unknown form of life. Because, As You said, some books are just about Sparkly Vampires from Space, or just aliens that are paranormal creatures with superpowers. Isn't like that in Obsidian ? (and the whole LUX series, that I didn't really enjoy).
There's another book I've read which is similar to The 5th Wave called 'Children of the Plague.' It's got a somewhat similar concept. An alien invasion by alien nanobots that take control of humans.
I liked this book. To avoid spoilers I won't elaborate on plot, but the main characters inner voices hooked me in and the characters were awesome. I did not find the plot new, but the delivery was refreshing. I appreciated the breaking of the young adult mold...no glittery vampires, no dystopian government oppressing the peasant folk, and it didn't have the overused and boring character mechanic rampant in young adult (you know where the main character is somehow way smarter than the other kids who somehow have no common sense at all, so of course the main character rises to the top of the heap and everyone else follows like sheep. Nope, dumb luck is a pretty big factor). It was nice to see a more realistic female lead. Anyways, I felt it was a good read.

And this months "I'm still cool, ain't I???" book is one which has been buzzing in the other group I help moderate for months now amongst the younger crowd, soon to be a mega blockbuster movie. So read it HERE so you look and sound AWESOME to the young people in your life!
I've already read this book and it's pretty good for a YA title. Bloody. Lots of killing. Alien invasion. And oh, body-snatchers (I really need to get off my butt and post reviews for that stack of books I've read next to my bed).
"The Passage meets Ender's Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up..."
