Running out of oxygen. That is a terrible way to die. When you freeze to death you fall asleep and die a little more peacefully. At least that is what I understand from people who die in avalanches.Although you know you are going to die in both cases.
I think the sensation of being unable to breathe would be worse, if it happened before the freezing. It is the stuff of nightmares for me.
Either way is awful, especially the knowing that one is going to die. That said, I agree with Sharon that dying from hypothermia is less painful and like going to sleep.
I've read that freezing to death is the preferred way to go. It is like going to sleep. They say that you feel warmer and slowly slip into sleep/death.
Of the two choices, I would rather freeze to death. As Anita mentioned, that person starts to feel warmer and just goes to sleep.
Just the whole idea of not being able to breathe is frightening. Freezing to death certainly sounds like the better option.
