Revisit the Shelf Poll - 2 Month Book Read February/March

This month's nominations for Revisit the Shelf will be changed a bit. Consistently over the last 5 years it is difficult for longer books to win in the polls for Revisit the Shelf. I understand that we might feel pushed to finish a longer book in one month. So, just this one time, in the interest of variety all books nominated should have a most popular edition that is longer than 400 pages. Also, just this once, books from last month's poll are fair game. The reading time for the winner of this poll will be all of February and March of 2024. This idea is to expand the range of books that might succeed in the polls.

Nominations for the February and March 2024 Revisit the Shelf book will open on December 1st, 2023.

1. Only books currently on our group bookshelf are eligible: Group Bookshelf

Time Since Last Read. A book is only eligible for rereading if it has not been a group read in the last 12 months (1 year). A book read by the group in any of our reading categories in the past year is not eligible for nomination.

Below is a list of the past year's Revisit the Bookshelf winners. Please do not nominate any of these:

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (1908) 320 pages, Last read Jan. 2024
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (1969) 340 pp., last read Dec. 2023
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (1847) 464 pages, last Nov. 2023.
Stoner by John Williams (1965) 288 p., last read Oct. 2023
East of Eden by John Steinbeck September 2023
The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells August 2023
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien July 2023
Moby-Dick or, the Whale by Herman Melville June 2023
Summer by Edith Wharton May 2023
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson April 2023
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath March 2023
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino February 2023

2. When making a nomination, please use "add book/author" link to help moderators and others view the book selected.

3. Only seven books, by seven different authors will move forward to each poll. This will be determined by the number of seconds a book receives. The seven books with the most seconds move to the poll.

4. One nomination and one second per member will be allowed. A nomination can be changed only until it has been seconded. Once seconded, in fairness to the member making the second, the nomination will stand.

You may change a second from one book to another. Please state which book you originally seconded and which you would like to change to.

5. In the interest of variety, please wait a month to re-nominate a book that has been in the poll. Please do not nominate any of the books that were in our poll last month:

Nominations will remain open until the 14th of the month. Polls will open on the 16th and run until the end of the month.

Thanks Gerard. I am repeating what was said above. Just this one time, we will nominate books longer than 400 pages that have been read before by this Group. Then we will have two months to read that book in the Revisit the Shelf Threads. The idea was 200 pages x 3 months is the Long Read formula. 200 pages x 2 months will be this "moderate length read" or longer read.

Kimberly we are doing something a little different this time. We want to nominate books that are longer than 400 pages and we will take two months to read it. Heart of Darkness could be nominated later in the year, but it doesn't fit the special rules this time.

Why not? Maybe set the page limit a bit higher. Or maybe just for one of the rounds? Personally I would like to read Don Quixote (1,023 pp), Les Misérables (1,463 pp) and The Pillars of the Earth (976 pp). I have nominated the two first a few times with no luck.

Let's see what happens.

I am glad the idea is well-received. Remember some books that are longer can be nominated in Long Reads if they were not originally nominated there...

Katy says "Keep in mind, that people can also nominate books we've read in the Long Reads category (as long as we haven't read them in that category) so that does allow for longer books to be read twice by the group."

But I like the idea of having a little more time for longer books, so it might come up again. I hesitate to commit to an exact schedule until we see what sort of participation we have.

One thing I find interesting is that every book is in the Old School category. By focusing on slightly longer books, we tended to pick books from before 1900.
