Winter 23 Read-a-Thon: Team Gingerbread
Hi team Gingerbread! I'm in Australia so it's 2nd December here. Busy Saturday so I'm just quickly checking in and will check out our tasks later tonight.
Hello Team!I know I input a LOT of books but after I finish my current read (Which won't count for here, just pages) I'm not sure where I'll go next so I just put all my planned reads on here. ;)
This looks like fun but it also seems a bit harder than last time. Good luck everyone.
Good morning Team Gingerbread! I have to try and not get distracted with thinking about the Popsugar list. I'm currently reading The Invocations which I think would work for I'll or disabled because one character's leg is literally rotting (but in a magical sense).
I haven't really planned out any books for this week so I can try and pick up things that fit as we go.
I finished Iron Flame today. I stopped reading on Wednesday when I had about 105 pages to go to make sure it could count for the readathon! At this point I struggle to decide where to put the books. This one covers a few topics.
From what I understand any books finished now can only be used for the Bronze level or counted for candy canes. No slotting them in for later levels.
First book finished, I put The Invocations down under a character who is sick.I'm starting A Midwinter's Tail now, it works for letter or animal for bronze level or Christmas for silver. I have a busy day tomorrow so not sure how much reading I'll get done.
Ellie I would use it for letter because that one is harder to find. I Have another animal book...Plus I have a book that is a Christmas book as well. I'm not reading them yet but they are short quick reads.
Gingerbread is my favorite wintry dessert, so super excited to be a part of this team. Let's get reading.

I have finished my audiobook and put it under person with a disability. Won free tickets to a garden festival today so won't have as much reading time as planned. We have got off to a great start team!
Hi team,Sorry for the late check-in. I've finished my first book of the week and I have added it to the spreadsheet. I have a few other books I'm reading through and an audiobook I should finish by the end of the week. I've added all my books to the spreadsheet.
Looking forward to reading with everyone.
Hi Team Gingerbread,I finished my first book
and put it on Dec. 7 - Light Source on the cover (sun). Going to start my horror/historical fiction next. LOL We are off to a great start!
Hey everyone!Today did NOT go as planned. I spent most of the day out with my sister and didn't get as much reading done as I wanted to.
I did just finish the two books I was already reading. Neither will count since they both, ironically, had 61 pages left. I did however, start my audio book Finding Me.
Good morning! (At least it is morning where I am!) I had a question about our spreadsheet. When we finish a book, aside from marking it complete, do we want to have a finished tab as well? That way the information we have on what dates our books might fill won't be skewed by finished books. I would hate just to delete our books, but was wondering what others thought.
Hi Team!I am a late add to the group. Somehow I never saw the signup. I have a couple books in progress. There was no room at the end of the spreadsheet, so I added a couple columns in the middle. Hopefully, that won't cause a problem.
Does anyone have a clue what COLOR their apps are? I sure don't. The icons for the apps I use most all seem to be blue (on my phone) but I can't say I have a favorite. I guess that means I would need to read a book with a blue cover??
Katherine wrote: "Good morning! (At least it is morning where I am!) I had a question about our spreadsheet. I like this format better than the old one, and agree that the finished books should be removed from the Planning page so we can really see how many books might fit a prompt

Welcome Edie.
I don't really have a favourite app either but thought well I like goodreads and that's a cream colour and the book I'm listening to at the moment is half cream -
(althought now that I look at it, the book version isn't as much cream as the audio version - on my libby app it's about half cream). But I figured my book apps were ones I liked, so libby burgendy, audible, orange...
But like you, a lot of my apps are blue.
I just finished Saving Shiloh and used it for a book featuring an animal.I'm still working on Finding Me but, I want to use it in the gold level so I will make sure I don't finish it until we are there.

I loved Tom Lake. Perhaps I am a bit prejudiced because I live in Nashville and my book club meets at Ann Patchett's book store, Parnassus.
I just finished
and put it under yellow cover. Not sure what I'm going to read next, but it's going to be something light and quick!
It can be useful to keep a copy of the plans of completed books if we need to shuffle things, I think we can still do that before we lock in a level, just not move books between levels.I managed to squeeze in a bit of audio yesterday. I haven't put Same Bed Different Dreams on the plan because it's long and it's been taking me ages to get as far as I have, but at least I can count the hours!
Argh! Did someone change the date formatting on the spreadsheet? I just had to argue with my phone for five minutes that it was not April. Are most of you in this group in the US? I'm usually in a Europe/Australia team.EDIT: I've switched the date column back to plain text so you can type in whatever format you're comfortable with. If you're doing something clever with the dates, please shout, but I don't think it effects anything other than my sanity . 🤣
Ellie wrote: "Argh! Did someone change the date formatting on the spreadsheet? I just had to argue with my phone for five minutes that it was not April. Are most of you in this group in the US? I'm usually in a ..."Just input the month first instead of the day and it will work.
It will show up with the day first but you have to type it month first.
JessicaMHR wrote: "Just input the month first instead of the day and it will work...."I was typing in 12/4 and it still put in April, presumably because my phone is set up to use a different format. I don't think we need to enforce US date formats because we're not using the dates anywhere other than reference. If I type in 4th Dec, that's easy to understand for everyone?
Also sorry if I come across as snippy, I'm not feeling great today and date formatting drives me mad at the best of times (causes a lot of bugs in my line of work!).
I finished The Promise Pearl S Buck 1943 for a book set in Asia - only 4 more to go to complete Bronze! Now trying to decide what to read next. I have several to finish for various challenges before the end of the month, but tempted to add one for one of the prompts nobody has marked yet. I have a short one with an ugly cover that I might try...
I can finish listening to Tinkers today, if no one else is planning on finishing one for HUMAN RIGHTS. If someone is reading one that finishes that prompt, I can finish it if/when we get into SILVER and use it for several things there.I am reading a historical fiction, but have about 200 more pages and not as much time to read during the week. I can concentrate on that one, if needed. If not, I will read for candy canes.
I'm hoping to finish The Hotel Room Mix-Up tonight. It fits for Read a book featuring a party for bronze.
I'm reading one for your app's favorite color. I had to go in to work today so I'm not too far into it yet. I have about 38 mins left of Finding Me but, I need us to get to GOLD so I can use it there.
***UPDATE: Couldn't wait, had to hear the end. So, only using for minutes.***
I think whoever finishes first should have the option to slot it in to where we need it at that moment.
Oh and Ellie, it's fine. I get it, when I was in college I started writing the date with the day first after I learned that the rest of the world does that.
(not to discourage anyone but, I was looking at another group yesterday and they were already working on silver....eeeekkk!)
Hi all,I've definitely been reading less than intended so far this week. But, just finished The Hotel Room Mix-Up and slotted it in for a book featuring a party.
I agree Jessica, people should just slot in a book as they finish where it fits.
I started Their Vicious Games as I thought it would work for dark and depressing but it's also YA so shouldn't be that dark and depressing! My copy has a sort of Goodreads coloured cover too, but I imagine we'll be done with Bronze before I finish. I should have more reading time tomorrow.
Finished Crook Manifesto and used it for historical fiction. I am starting No One Leaves the Castle a middle grade book recommended by my granddaughter. It will fit several prompts on the silver level...
We're nearly done with bronze! Some apps and their colours if you are happy to claim one as a favourite app to match your book:Orange - Audible
Teal/Turquoise - Deliveroo, Fitbit
Green - Whatsapp, Spotify
Black & White - Threads, X
Red & Yellow - McDonalds
Yellow, Red, Green, Blue - Google Maps, Gmail
Red & Black - Netflix
Red & White - YouTube
Dark Blue - Disney
Beige/Brown - Goodreads
I'll plug away on my Goodreads coloured book later today.
Just finished Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation - the cover is black and white, which I realised is the same colour as the camera app on my phone! Bronze level complete, and on to silver!
Yea!! We made it to Silver level! Congrats everyone!I think it will probably go faster now because we are all probably already well in to a book the fits in this level. I know I am getting closer to finishing It Starts with Us which I can use for a few different places. I do have to work the next few days so we'll see how much reading I can actually get done.
Just finished Lady Tan's Circle Of Women - what a great book! I have attached it to "centred around a family". This morning I finished both my audiobook and my real book, and am feeling a bit washed out as both were highly emotional - taking a break until tomorrow!
I finished the audio of Tom Lake and have slotted it in for book featuring planes or brothers. I think it works as there is quite a focus on Duke and Sebastian being brothers.
Happy we got to Silver! I just finished
. It's a retelling of the Donner Party from a horror angle so definitely a dark and depressing book. But I highly recommend it! (Although I can see how it might not be up everyone's alley.)
Sue wrote: "Just finished Lady Tan's Circle Of Women - what a great book! I have attached it to "centred around a family". This morning I finished both my audiobook and my real book, and am fee..."I agree, it was a great book.
Hi all,I just finished my second book and I've added it to the spreadsheet. Work has been really busy, so I have not had much time to read but I've been listening to audiobooks in the morning and when I get home.
I'm hoping to finish my last two books in the coming days.
I finished Their Vicious Games and put it down against friendship since dark and depressing has been done.We don't have anything down for sci-fi (gold level) so I'll go have a rummage for something to read next that fits.
I've moved the completed books onto their own tab, just so we can see what we've got left on the planning tab.
Ellie wrote: "We don't have anything down for sci-fi (gold level) so I'll go have a rummage for something to read next that fits...."That sounds good....I definitely don't have any of those, not really my type of book. LOL.
___________
I started If the Shoe Fits on audio (even though I have the book) because I finished my other audio. Hoping to make more progress today on it.
I also want to read A Shiloh Christmas for the Christmas one tonight. It's short so I should be able to read it in one night.
