Amanda (stoneknivesandbearskins) | 86 comments There are a lot of books with the title "The Eyes of a Child/The Eyes of the Child" and none of the ones I've found seem to match the one I'm looking for.

The book was divided into sections like "The Nightmare" "The Escape" "The Trial" etc. The first line of the book was the dialogue "If you're going to kill yourself..." and the first chapter/prologue was about this intruder trying to kill a man, but make it look like he had committed suicide. He was trying to force the guy to write a suicide note, when there was a struggle, and it turned out to be a dream this little girl was having about her father dying. I only read the first chapter, but from what I understand the girl's mother had run away with another man named Chris, and I'm assuming he killed the husband.

Jules' suggestion of Eyes of a Child by Richard North Patterson looks dead on. The early sections are titled "The Nightmare: October 16" and "The Escape: October 19 - October 24". The second line in chapter one is "If you're going to kill yourself..."
