Reading the prequel first made a difference for me. I was a lot angrier about the missing eight years. Reading about that gap the first time didn't really register as strongly and having read the story in the prequel, I was really mad and sad for them.
Yes, I had read this book several years ago and was not overly impressed by it, which was a disappointment. Having read the prequel made a lot more sense of this story.
The first time I read this (without the prequel), I had a tough time understanding this deep level of feelings that Nick and Sam “suddenly” had for each other. Reading the prequel definitely made this less “insta-love” and had me rooting for them very differently. The romance worked this time around.
And, it made me despise Peter early on and put him on my suspect list.

Yes, reading the prequel made a difference. I had a better understanding of Nick and Sam's intense attraction and emotional connection after. The first time around, their almost insta-love relationship seemed very flimsy to me.
