In 1939 Christopher, a German citizen, and Rebecca , who is Jewish, live in Jersey when the Nazi's invade the island. Rebecca and Christopher are in love and plan to be married, but before they can Rebecca is sent to one of the German camps. Christopher who is determined to find her moves to Germany and joins the SS.

This is historical fiction and I know sometimes situations are simplified and many occurrences combined for the sake of the story, but in this case there were so many coincidences and simplifications of the situations that it just didn't seem possible for this to have occurred. In addition the characters weren't as fully developed as they could have been so they didn't seem real and I really wasn't invested in them. There are so many really good WWII novels that this one pales in comparison.
