Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5120 comments Yeah I'm also horrible with names. If its a standalone novel, I most likely can't even tell you the MC's name unless I've read it more than once.

It depends on the book for me, I have abandoned an audio and switched to reading on occasion. This one I was fine with the audio and I was glad because I already had them lol

If you have the Audible subscription that includes Audible Plus (not sure which don't have it but I believe some do not) the first few of these are available for free to listen to.

The last few years I’ve gotten real bad with names. I have to meet someone several times before I remember their name. It’s bad."

There's a trick to that. When you first meet someone and hear their name, insert it back into the conversation immediately over the next few seconds.

I.e. Use their name 2 or 3 times in the first minute, this shifts the name from short term to long term memory and you'll have it for the rest of the day at least.

I learned this trick 'cause I suck at names too.

Mind you, if you get introduced to 5 people in 10 seconds .... it breaks down, I don't have a trick for that situation, but for a new one on one, 'name reuse' works well.

Felina | 2416 comments I have heard that. I need to put it to practice cause I recognize everybody at my church but know about 40% of their names.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5120 comments I do do (heh) the repeat names back to the person thing at work for phone calls when I need to document who I talked to.. But I'm not exactly talking to my book characters (which is a real shame honestly lol)

Nirkatze | 21560 comments I almost wonder if I would prefer MB's internal voice because I can strip it of gender identifiers... and then you can time your own snark too...

@Chris, I'm totally the same... if I don't see something written down, I can't remember it at all...

Mel | 2367 comments I went to a book club this week, and it seemed most of the audio readers needed confirmation of the character names. It makes sense if they are fantasy names or from an unfamiliar culture that it helps to see it written down. I always watch my shows with subtitles so I don't miss anything.

Heh, I just imagined myself trying to listen to an audiobook and inevitably complaining, "This audiobook needs subtitles! ... Oh right. Thank goodness those exist!"

This made me laugh loud enough that my husband asked what was funny lol

Nirkatze | 21560 comments Ditto on Narlika--totally just literally LOLed right now.
