Ebony hit the wall with a harsh thud and collapsed in a ragged heap. He didn’t move for a moment, tongue flicking as he tried to get his bearings. Avalon had cued for protection, Will had been pointing a sword at her so it was plausible that the snake would come to her defense. But oh, he hurt. Never before had one of Avalon’s commands resulted in his physical pain. Likely, she didn’t know. Ebony roused himself and began to slide down the stairs at a slow pace, away from the commotion. He’d locate a crack in the walls and hide until Avalon came for him. Or better yet, he could go find her. The stress of the situation was getting to him, and Ebony couldn’t wait to be save around his master’s neck.

For her part, Avalon waited silently until Adrian had barred the doors. After a quick glance down the halls — the coast was clear — she relaxed slightly. “Good,” the princess breathed quietly, meeting her father’s eyes. “Almost there.” They couldn’t go out through the main gates, that would spell more trouble. They also couldn’t stand here in the open for long. She stepped forward and entered the king’s hold once again, silently praising Ebony for saving them. Avalon nodded her father forward, on down the hall. She hoped he knew of a suitable secret passage that could get him out. There were many in this old castle, but most had been discovered or gone to ruin. “Let’s go. And be careful with that sword. If you cut me again…” The threat remained unfinished as Avalon donned her mask again.

The pair began walking down the hallway, Adrian looking around as he tried to pinpoint exactly where they were. Ah, they were close to the main gate. Adrian released his grip of Avalon, letting her free. Adrian approached a rather large painting and narrowed his eyes at it, taking it in. Using the sword, he quickly sliced it right down the middle. He moved the destroyed art aside and nodded at Avalon, "Lets go."

Avalon ducked through the opening, and once her father had followed, moved the painting as best she could to somewhat cover the opening. Might give them a little extra time if their escape route wasn’t obvious. The passage was dark, and it took Avalon’s eyes a moment to adjust. “Just a bit further,” she murmured, both for her own sake as much as Adrian’s. This day had been a nightmare, and the girl was exhausted. She let her father take the lead and followed close behind, steps silent. Avalon could only pray that they didn’t run into any more trouble.

Adrian led them through the tunnels. They eventually reached the outside. He pulled her into the alleyway, shutting the trapdoor behind them.

Avalon turned around and faced her father, offering him a crooked smirk. They’d done it. They had really done it. Her celebration was short lived. Avalon’s face soon dropped all emotion as she thought of her next steps. “Go. I’m staying,” she said quietly, though decisively. Adrian would not ruin her life as he did his own. Avalon had plans, and this couldn’t get in the way.
