December Discussion: We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds

Our last book of 2022. What are the thoughts?

I was pretty sure the runaway Printz winner was going to be All My Rage . . . until I read (listened to) We Deserve Monuments. Now it's going to be a close race. I loved Avery's voice, the little things the three friends did (the flowers, the rings) to identify, and the slow-burn revelation of the past between Avery's mom and the neighbor. Mama Letty was a bit cliched, but in the best possible way. And the murder in the past was icing on an already rich cake. Maybe just a little TOO much going on, which a more seasoned author would be better at controlling, so my vote will probably still go to Sabaa Tahir, with an honor sticker for Ms. Hammond.

There's an active poll for the 2023 winner under polls. I don't think we're picking a book to read for Jan (from the looks of things).
