Steven (arbrus) | 2 comments Teens' girls adventures in 9 fantastical worlds

The Colored Worlds fantasy series tells the story of the adventures of a teenage girl from the Flower country - a realm in the fan-tastical Colored Worlds.
“The Yellow World” by Steven Rox (Hardcover, 197 pages, 38 illustrations). This is the second book from fantasy series “The Colored Worlds”. Age 12-18.

There are nine fantastical colourful worlds in which the most noble of inhabitants live side by side with the most dreadful of monsters. What is it that divides and connects these worlds? Each of the colored worlds has its own ruler, language and treasure. In these magical worlds, five teenage girls embark upon and survive treacherous and sometimes comical adventures. The friends travel through the colored worlds (each time experiencing a new real-ity) in search of hidden treasures. Our heroines meet the unusual in-habitants of each of these worlds, uncover secret treasures, discover the answers to many a questions and return to their own country more mature and self-assured.

Sounds interesting. I will see if I can check it out sometime. Are these books in the Ultimate Teen Book Guide?

The Lovely Bones

I loved the idea of Heaven that this book describes. It was wonderful book about a family's journey through grief. I loved that the ending was not really a happily ever after, although it annoyed me somewhat (just because you expect that happily ever after sometimes).

Cherylann | 133 comments Tara, I agree with you. I thought this book was going to be depressing. People thought I was a little nuts when I said that it wasn't a depressing book. The idea of Heaven was what made this uplifting for me - that and the fact that it showed the family getting on with their lives. Because that's what happens after something terrible. You ultimately need to find a way to pick up the pieces of your life and go on.

Tara I really am interested on how they adapt the storyline for the movie. The previews for the movie look really good.

Tara I Capture the Castle

I really enjoyed the eccentric characters and the innocence in Cassandra's writing. It was very enjoyable, but the end disappointed me and left me unfulfilled.

Lisa (lbhick) | 62 comments I plan to read this for the coming of age task in the seasonal challenge. I've wanted to read it for a long time.

Tara I finished two more books this weekend.

The Book Thief
Great story set in Germany during WWII. Loved that it was told by Death, who was more humane and gentle than people give him credit for.

A Living Nightmare
A fun and quick book to read. I really got sucked into the story.

I can't believe you used "sucked" to describe A Living Nightmare .

Tara I did not even think of the connotation of the word when I used it. Ha ha.

Tara The Eyre Affair

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read Jane Eyre now. I feel like I know the characters in such a different light, it will be interesting to see what I think of the original.

Also, this did not feel like a Young Adult book to me. All the characters were in their 30's or older, but it was a fun book and referenced Jane Eyre so maybe that was it.

Tara The Beach **

This was another book that did not feel like a young adult book. I kept telling myself that drugs made the people on the beach act the way they did, since choices that were made completely perplexed me. Maybe it was the mob mentality, but I could not believe the choices that were made after the shark attack. Richard's view of the world and his role in it were equally perplexing and at times I thought he just may be a sociopath!

Tara Jane Eyre ****

Although it took me a little while to get into to the story, I did fall in love with it. Slow moving, yet still captivating. Although, I think I liked the story more because I read The Eyre Affair first (oddly enough).

Tara A Christmas Carol ***

It was good to read. I enjoyed it.

message 18: by Cherylann (new)

Cherylann | 133 comments I'm starting that with my class after the holidays (I know, it's a little weird to do this book in January). I love line on the first page (something to the effect of) Marley was dead as a doornail although the coffin nail is the deadest piece of ironmongery there is. I crack up ~ my students just stare at me. :(

I'm heading out to see the play today, which is a Princeton tradition although I've never taken part.

Tara Cherylann-I loved that banter too! I love starting books off with a chuckle!

Maus I A Survivor's Tale My Father Bleeds History****
It was truly a different experience to read about the holocaust in this format. The horrors were more vivid when drawn in black ink. I highly recommend this one! I now have to get my hands on the continuation of the story to find out how his father's story ends.

Tara Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ***

I really enjoyed this, but I was not in love with it as I thought I would be. It was a fun ride and I appriciated the extra details (absent in the movie), especially the beginning of the novel. I think the scenes were of his living condition and his family were much more apalling in my mind (compared to the movie). I am not sure if watching the movie first affected my response to the novel, but I found that I enjoyed the parts of the book that I liked in the movie. I look forward to reading more books in the series as a nice escape from reality.
