Announcement: New Moderator

Those of you who followed our most recent major read, Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse," will understand why we have chosen Susan to join us on the moderator team for Classics and the Western Canon. Susan led us through those sometimes choppy, sometimes murky, waters with grace and skill. I'm delighted that we were able to convince her to join us on a regular basis. (I'm afraid it doesn't pay very well.)

I was pretty clueless when reading To the Lighthouse the first time I read it and reading it again I was surprised to have so much better appreciation for this work with Susan as the moderator. Welcome and Thank you for helping me not give up on Woolf.

Thanks, Borum! I’m glad To the Lighthouse was better the second time through and very glad you haven’t given up on Woolf. If you want to verify that she could write very straightforward English when she wanted to, try her essays like “How Should One Read a Book” or “A Room of One’s Own.”

I can assure you of that. As King Lear says, nothing will come of nothing. (An occasional storm on the heath notwithstanding.)

I find "Room of One's Own" more than clear; it's brilliant. A lot to think about, for men as well as women. Helped me realize the predicament of women until very contemporary times. They had no money! None. They were in liege to their husbands, imperative that they find one. Without that, prostitution was the only way to gain income.

Andile, I'm sorry but this is not a forum to help you answer exam questions. You might consider browsing through some of the available discussion threads on classical Greek literature to see if they are of any help to you.

Thanks, Susan! I've read A Room of One's Own and I loved it. I should check out 'How Should One Read a Book'. I've learned a lot from the book on how we can read the same book so differently!
