I disliked Mr. Bovary (Charles’s father) for obvious reasons. He’s a frequent at the public houses & cheats on his wife with other women, and blames other men for his misfortunes. He thinks it’s a right of passage for Charles to grow up in that Spartan upbringing to ensure his heartiness and often forces his son to do without & makes him feel like a failure throughout his life. He seems like a real treat to be around...poor Madame Bovary Sr.
I have mixed feelings about the rest of the characters.
Charles seems very clueless & dull throughout and it’s no wonder a young Emma Bovary feels like she made a mistake in hastily marrying him.
As Emma is the main focus of the book, I have to say my like and dislike for her character is complex and wavers throughout the story. At first I loved her for her desire to find the adventurous & romantic love she’s been after. I was rooting for her freedom from Charles (maybe not with sleazy Rodolphe) and then instantly disliked her for abusing her child & her continuous string of lies she maintained.

That's very interesting in my opinion since all of them were very much too close for comfort with Anna Karenina ( which was a response to this book), it was very hard for me to enjoy these characters but at least Emma Bovary did not commit suicide.
