20.6 - It's a Fact - Trishhartuk's Task: Hugos Season

A fair amount of my June-August reading time is taken up with the nominees for the Hugo Awards, which are voted for by the members of the World Science Fiction Convention. As well as the Hugos, members also choose the location of the WorldCon two years ahead, and also of the North American SF Con the following year, if that year’s WorldCon is being held outside North America.

Read one book, from one of the following options.

Option 1: As the Hugos (as well as the Lodestar Award for Best YA Book and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer, which are awarded at the same ceremony) celebrate Science Fiction and Fantasy writing, read a book with an MPG of Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Science Fiction Fantasy. The MPG can be stand-alone or embedded.

Option 2: This year’s WorldCon is being held in Chicago, IL, while Chengdu, China was selected for 2023. The NASFIC Site Selection bids for 2023 (as the 2023 WorldCon is in China) are from Orlando, FL and Winnipeg, Canada; while currently the only submitted WorldCon bid for 2024 is Glasgow, Scotland.

Read a book at least 50% set in Florida or Illinois USA; Canada; China; or Scotland; or by an author born in one of these states or countries.REQUIRED: If the setting or author's birth location aren't specified in the GR records, please include a reference to establish them.

Option 3: The first WorldCon was held in New York in 1939. This year will be the 80th! Read a book which was first published between 1939 and 2022, inclusive, AND has both 8 and 0 somewhere in the page count (but not necessarily together).

Robin P | 1687 comments Please lock in Trust for Fantasy, thanks!

*Not necessary, I've finished it and Fantasy is still there (although it's not at all a correct genre for this book.)

I could argue that if it isn't actually Fantasy (or, indeed SF), then it doesn't really fit the prompt! But if the MPG is present, then that's what counts.

Robin P | 1687 comments Apparently a number of people thought it fit that genre, but that's not unusual. Some are really wrong, like Fiction or Nonfiction when it clearly isn't that. But for the challenge it's fine as long as we always use the same rule.

True enough.

This House Is Haunted by John Boyne

Would this count for Option 1?

That's fine. I see two different variants of "Fantasy", and the task allows for stand-alone or embedded. It's just, in this case, it's what's below Fantasy that's embedded!

Apologies for the delay - I wasn't online over the weekend. Yes I see a variety of Fantasy in the MPGs

Thank you! And no worries, I just thought it was best to check. :)
