This is not a test.
The TV had shown nothing but a black screen with those words in big, white block letters across it, static from the station always in the background.
In the first hours, people had talked over the screen.
News reporters and the like.
"We've been informed that a black hole has formed above the Earth's Northern hemisphere, expanding rapidly. S...Scientists estimate we have less than... Than a fortnight to evacuate the planet.
The woman speaking took several sobbing breaths, yelled at someone to let her be, then started to speak again.
"To... To all of you out there, all of you who've been watching us here at 101 over the years, th-th-thank you. Thank you and... And God have mercy on you all." A small click sounded.
Josh grabbed my arm.
"Oh, God, no."
Over the TV, a man shouted "No, Suzy, don't do th-"
A shot rang out into dead silence.
"We're sorry for that. The man who had shouted at the anchorwoman said.
"Thank you all. And Good luck."
They cut the audio.
This is not a test.

All I ever saw of the black hole was on Josh's brother's telescope.
"This thing's massive. Ryan said, nervously tapping his foot.
"I mean, it's just massive, guys. I think we should-"
"Don't. Josh cut him off.
"Don't you dare say it."
"I think we should take the Archangel. Ryan said, listless and scared.
"We've got no other shot."
Josh covered his eyes.
"But it'll only hold-"
"I know. His brother cut him off, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I know. It'd just be a few of us. And nobody but the inner circle could know. Just the seven of us."
I looked up back up at the telescope. The hole wasn't showing itself to us, yet, but we could plainly see that something was desperately wrong.
Ryan had several constellations mapped out and taped to the wall in the alcove that wrapped around the widow's walk. Some of the star points had been crossed out in black ink.
Stars burn out. They move. The configuration of the Big Dipper changes every year. It'd be gone some day anyway.
But it wasn't gone now because of thermonuclear fusion had deemed it unfit.
It was gone because the sky was being eaten by the black hole.
It would descend down over us in less than a week.
"He's right. I said. "We have to."
Josh nodded.
"Yeah, I know. We start tomorrow."
Ryan and I nodded.
"Gentlemen," Ryan said, "prepare for takeoff."

The Archangel was something Ryan had been messing around with as long as Josh and I had been friends.
In its early stages, it had been nothing more than a jumble of wires and a mess of scrap metal.
Josh and I used to jab at Ryan about it, called him the Professor to tick him off, but as the ship neared completion, we stopped poking fun.
The previous winter, while we were all stuck inside because of a blizzard from Hell, Ryan had come bursting into my living room, looking perfectly mad.
"Our place. He'd wheezed. "Now."
Hesitantly, i'd followed him though the snow.
"You're outta your buggin' mind. I'd said as we mounted the steps leading to their house.
"You really think that stupid thing-"
The ship, a feat of modern science, sat in the center of the big garage.
"Can I cook or what?"

According to Ryan, who'd always been sort of out of...
Okay, nuts, the Archangel was a back-up plan for the lot of us from the neighborhood, should anything happen.
It would hold him, Josh, me, their uncle who'd raised them after their parents disappeared, their grandfather, my mother and my sister, Lynne.
It wasn't a sure-fire thing, the ship could, in theory, malfunction, but Ryan swore up and down it was a ninety-seven-three chance we'd be right as rain.
Call me a stickler, but those odds still made me nervous.

"You can't be serious. Lynne said, her ash-blonde hair obscuring the look on her face.
"Ryan Cooke's a feck. He has no bloody idea how to build a birdhouse, let alone a spaceship."
"Lynne, don't call people names. Mum chided. She stood over us at the table, her hands locked across her stomach.
"Mikael, how sure are you that Ryan's, uh, ship will work?"
I shrugged.
"Pretty sure. I trust the guy."
Mum looked worriedly at the sky outside. It had gotten so bad, even the midday sky was blue-gray, the sun a gritty shell of what it used to be.
"Well..."
"Mum! Lynne nearly shouted.
"You can't possibly be considering this. They're get us all killed."
Mum gave her a stern look.
"Anything that gets you kids off this God-forsaken rock, I'm willing to risk. She said, her harsh blue eyes flaring.
"You're a child. You'll not tell me what's what."
Lynne crossed her arms and looked at the floor like she always did when she'd been chastised.
Mum looked back up at me.
"Where're we going if we do go with Ryan and Josh?"
I tried to remember Ryan's explanation of the plan.
"There's this space station the U.S left up there in the 80's, a prototype for the ISS, I think. They put a few people up there, and as far as Ryan knows, they're still up there, alive and well. They signed up to, you know, live up there. Forever."
Mum nodded along.
"And Ryan's sure they're alive up there?"
I nodded.
"Yeah, he emails back and forth with one of the original crewmember's daughter. She's about your age, Lynne." I said, nudging my sister's shoulder.
She didn't look up.
"So, how long would it take us to get there?"
Mum asked.
"Day. Two, tops."
Mum gave a ragged sigh, brushing her hair away from her forehead.
"Okay. She said. "Okay, we. Are. Doing this."
Lynne looked up, tears blurring her eyes, as fiercely blue as Mum's.
"But what it closes? She asked. "It could always-"
"Ryan says it's not gonna close. I interjected.
"It's gonna get bigger."
Lynne sighed, putting her head in closed arms.
I put my arm over her shoulders.
"Lynne, it'll be okay. We're gonna be fine."
Lynne looked up at me, tears running down her face.
"Yeah, we'll be okay." She sobbed.
I looked up at Mum, but she only turned her head.

The next day seemed to pass too slowly.
Mum, Lynne and I spent the whole day preparing.
Lynne sulked as she packed her clothes and the personal belongings she was taking, never once meeting my eyes or answering me when I tried to talk to her.
"Lynne, I'm sorry. I said, standing in her bedroom doorway, watching her mechanically fold clothes and stuff them into her duffle.
"It's not safe to stay here. We have to go."
She looked up, staring at something above my head.
"I know, Mikael, but that doesn't mean I can't be upset about leaving my home planet, does it?"
She snapped.
I swallowed.
"No, Lynne. Of course not."

The three of us, under a gray, black-tinged sky, trooped to Josh and Ryan Mallick's house.
Josh smiled when he saw me.
"Phew. We were about to leave without you guys."
Mum laughed. Whole-hearted laughed, despite the situation. I think she was going to cry if she didn't.
Josh ruffled Lynne's hair.
"Hey, kid. How you holdin' up?"
She didn't answer him.
Josh sighed.
"About as good as the rest of us, eh? He nodded at the garage.
"Buck's in the garage, I bet he wants to see you." Lynne perked up enough to scamper to the garage door and dash inside.
"We're taking the cat?" I asked Josh.
He shrugged.
"There's a little room. Why not?"
Mum smiled.
"I'm glad. I was a tad worried about the dastardly little furball. She hefted her and Lynne's bags up.
"See you in there, cadet." She said, nudging my shoulder with hers before she walked off after Lynne.
Josh clapped me on the back.
"How you holdin' up, mate?"
I sighed.
"Alright, I guess."
He nodded.
"We'll get through this."
I picked up my own duffle and stalked off after my family.
"I hope." I called over my shoulder.

Thirty minutes later, we all sat in the Archangel, snug as bugs in rugs.
Ryan sat at the controls, his and Josh's uncle Luke beside him.
Their grandfather sat in the second row, Josh beside him and me beside Josh.
In the back sat Mum, holding Lynne tight to her.
Lynne had sworn she wasn't going to look until we were at the space station. Buck the cat lay snuggled at her feet.
"Everyone all set?" Ryan called over his shoulder.
"As we'll ever be." Josh called back.
"Okay. Ryan said with a sigh. "Let's do this thing."
He flipped a bunch of switches, engaging the engine.
Luke flipped a switch on a small remote, opening the roof of the garage.
"In this for the long haul, eh?" I asked, glancing at Josh.
He nodded.
"Sure looks that way."
"Alright. Ryan called. "Take off in ten... Nine... Eight..."
Josh, as secure in his masculinity as the next guy, snaked his fingers into mine and squeezed my hand in a death-grip.
"Five... Four... Three...Two...One."
The Archangel gave a lurch, moving up and falling a bit before it soared into the air.
I threw one last look at Earth as it grew further and further away.
The black hole, now a hulking mass with half the planet sucked into it, was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.
And the most terrifying.
Josh turned his head.
"We got out just in time. He mused. "That's the U.K it's got now."
I sighed.
"Can't believe we'll never see it again."
Josh nodded.
"Yeah, it's pretty intense. But, we got out. He repeated. He turned to face me.
"We made it."
I nodded.
"That we did. I didn't look as the black hole sucked planet Earth into it, ending existence there in the blink of an eye.
"That we did."

So I feel really bad, but I sat in front of computer, and couldn't think of anything. I got a bit of a story started, but I just couldn't see where it was going. Sorry again, but I just don't think I have anything to go with and will not be able to write for this contest.

U.S- 1960s, Drama/family/friendship

You always told me to be myself, to never give in to the stereotypes, the lies. Everyone always told me what to do, who to be, but you never did. You were my lifeline, the one point holding me, keeping me from falling off the cliff. Keeping me from becoming the person everyone else saw me as. And now, you're gone.

It feels strange talking to a slab of stone, like somehow this barren rock is you. When they found you, there was nothing left. Just a few bits and pieces. Your family buried an empty coffin. They miss you. Your little sister cried when they lowered the casket into the ground, she kicked and screamed. Your ma cried too, but not as loud. Your dad just stood there, he was always a hard man. Of course I didn't cry, you always told me that no one was worth my tears, even if it was you.

So here I am, talking to a piece of rock like it has replaced my best friend. I probably look silly, but I don't care. You taught me to not care what I looked like, to not care what other people thought of me.

Do you remember when we first met. I was twelve, and you were eleven. It was my first day at school, and nobody would talk to me. The other kids all moved their desks away from mine, everyone whispered, except you. You sat down right next to me, looked me in the eye, and told me we were going to be best friends. I didn't believe you, but it looks like you were right, you always were. It's been six years since we met. I'm almost eighteen, and you would've been seventeen last week.

I feel so alone, without you who am I? You always told me to be my own person, to define myself. You would probably laugh at me right now, you would find it funny how alone I feel. You would tell me that I was being silly, that it didn't matter if you were there or not, that I was still me. I would give anything to hear you laugh.

It's late, my ma'll probably be waiting up for me. She knows where I am, but that will probably just make her worry more. I wish she wouldn't, she has some much to worry about as it is, she doesn't need to have my late night trips to the cemetery to worry about as well.

I'm rambling again, you always hated it when I rambled. If you were here you would tell me to sit up straight, look you in the eye, and say exactly what I came here to say. The only problem is, I'm not quite sure what I came here to say. It's been three months Meda, three long months since you died, three long months since they buried that empty casket, under this slab of stone. Three months since I lost my best friend, my only friend.

I guess part of me is here to say sorry. I should have protected you Meda. I should have run in front of that Train, and taken the hit for you. You were young, you had so much potential. Me, the only thing holding me to this world was you. I know your family blames me for your death too. They never liked me, hated it when you talked to me. Did you know that I wasn't allowed to come to your funeral, I had to sneak in and hide up in an oak tree. But I had to come, I had to see it for myself. I still come.

I remember when your family first met me. I was giving you a ride home on my bike. You were riding on my handle bars, I was swerving all over the road and you were laughing. I stopped at the corner where I always dropped you off, and there was your dad. What happened after that was blur, you were crying, I was on the ground, you're mom was screaming at your dad to stop. All your neighbors stood at their windows watching. I left as soon as I could. The next day, you sat down next to me at school like you did
everyday. You didn't even bring t up. When I finally asked you why you were still friends with me, you said that it didn't matter what your family thought, you wanted to be my friend and that was that. We never spoke of it again.

I always wondered why you were so nice to me. You could have shied away, like everyone else did. Yet, you didn't. You saw so much in me Meda. Everyone else just saw a good for nothing little kid. You saw the real me. Everyone hated me, but you acted as if, as if what I looked like didn't even matter. You made me feel special. All of my life I had been prosecuted, by people who didn't even know me, just for what I looked like. When you hear that you're inferior, a monster, stupid, dumb, and all the other names they used to call me, enough times you begin to believe it. But you set me straight. You said that it didn't matter that I was black and you were white. You taught me that what's on the outside doesn't matter, it's whats on the inside that counts.

How am I supposed to live with myself now Meda. You were my only friend, the only one who saw me for me. The only one who cared enough to get to know me before you judged me. Without you I have no one.

I brought you something. Red roses, you're favorite. I remember after a show, I would always wait out back, because Negroes weren't allowed inside the theater, and you would come out the stage door in full costume and make up. I would give you the roses, and you would smile and say I was being sweet. I loved to see you smile. I would've loved it even more to see you dance. You always looked beautiful in your costumes, and I could imagine you spinning around and around. Rain or shine I always waited by that door for you, and you always came.

I miss you Meda. I guess that's what I really came here to say. I miss the bike rides, the dancing in the rain. I miss you're smile, the way your face would get all scrunched up when you were angry. I miss the way your face would light up when you danced. It made you so happy. I hope there's a lot of dancing in heaven.

It's been hard without you. Being the only black kid in an all white school is hard to begin with. There are whispers and pointed looks, and bullies. But, you always taught me to stand up for myself. That no matter what they believed there was nothing that made me different from them, other than the color of my skin. Well, I finally did it Meda, I got accepted to Medical school. I proved them all wrong, and I couldn't have done it without you.
