But, to answer your original question about 5-star books, my last one was "The Love Songs of W. E. B. DuBois" by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers. My brief review of it here on goodreads was, "More than 800 pages, but it is one of those books you don't want to end."
Ha, my latest 5-star read was Rog's book. But the ones before that were Sandstorms: Days and Nights in Arabia by Peter Theroux (a great read for westerners who've lived in the Middle East) and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain (a great read for introverts and extroverts alike). What are your recent faves?

My wife just flew through that one and also didn't want it to end. I need to move it to the top of the list.
Faith wrote: "Ha, my latest 5-star read was Rog's book. But the ones before that were Sandstorms: Days and Nights in Arabia by Peter Theroux (a great read for westerners who've lived in the Middle East) and Quie..."the last two hits for me were:
"Empire of Pain" by Patrick Radden Keefe ("Say Nothing" was also excellent)
"Five Decembers" by James Kestrel (WWII crime noir)
Rog is spinning so many plates, it's no wonder this has been put on pause. My last favorites have been:
Louise Erdrich - "The Sentence"
Elif Shafak - "The Island of Missing Trees"
Jonathan Franzen - "Crossroads "
Thanks to Jeff & Valerie for starting things up again.
Some recent 5-star reads- How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States by Daniel Immerwahr
How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith
Any baseball fans? The Baseball 100 by Joe Posnanski is an absolute treasure.
Our Team by Luke Epplin is also very good.
And I'll second both Empire of Pain and Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe.
Yes Dan.Really enjoyed "Our Team" & "Say Nothing".
Thanks for the recommendation of "The Baseball 100" as spring training gets under way - maybe. Also I plan a revisit of Sidd Finch by Plimpton.
Latest 5 star books:Sutton by J.R. Moehringer. I think the author did a good job of letting you root for Sutton while you simultaneously know he's not going to win.
Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli. Likely classified as a YA book, it was an interesting twist to fictional takes of WWII. I've not spent a lot of time thinking about the treatment of the Roman/gypsy people during that time. Or orphans.
Marjorie Mornigstar by Herman Wouk. You think you know what's happening in the book and yet Marjorie surprises you at every turn.
Like others here I really enjoyed the book Say Nothing. I read it based on Rog's recommendation and it was a worthwhile read. I also picked up Vertigo City based on his year of books in review and I found the chapters hit or miss. I gave it a 4, but for me it was really 3.5. Despite it not being one of my favs I do think it was a worthwhile read.
If by chance you haven't read "Catch and Kill" I couldn't recommended it more. You couldn't make this stuff up.
My last five star read was “The Genetic Lottery: Why DNA Matters for Social Equality” by Kathryn Paige Harder.
Hello!Is anybody still out there?
Is there any chance of reviving this group with an infusion of Sean Dyche worms alongside a Pukka Pie?
Last five read:Keith Bruton - The Lemon Man
Anthony Horowitz - The Word Is Murder
Taylor Jenkins Reid - The Seven Husband's of Evelyn Hugo
Jane Harper - Exiles
Micheal Bennett - Better The Blood
Recent reads:- On the Yard (1960s American prison novel written by a longtime prisoner)
- The Partisan (recent thriller set during Cold War)
- One Day of Life (1980 Salvadoran novel)
- Weeping Waters (South African crime novel)
I finished "Batting on the Bosphorus" and am now reading another cricket -y novel: England, Their England by the Scottish writer A. G. Macdonell.
Still salty at anything and everything Dyche after the Chelsea match, but that's our own doing! I have a habit of only crossing the Atlantic for the worst games. Very excited to read The Exiles, I cannot get enough Jane Harper. Did you like it?
My last 5 star read was Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (Gabrielle Zevin). Other recent favorites: Remarkably Bright Creatures (Shelby Van Pelt) and Sea of Tranquility (Emily St. John Mandel).
I also liked both Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow as well as Sea of Tranquility. Good stories. Just read Jordan Harper's LA noir Everybody Knows. Great read and very fast-paced.
Currently inching forward through Shelby Foote's Civil War vol. 2... no spoilers!
Yes, Allison, I did enjoy Exiles (as I enjoyed Ms. Harper's previous books). Just finished the Union Berlin book - fascinating story of this club.Looks like I have to seek out Tomorrow... book.
Thanks for recommendations folks.

I miss Roger's recommendations!
Who's read something great lately? What was that last 5-star read?
