Christal | 374 comments The Unleashing (Call of Crows, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

Shelf: Paranormal Romance
Book: The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston
Series: Call of Crows #1
Date Read: 3/17/2015
Rating: ★★★

Review:
This was my first Shelly Laurenston book and while the world-building was interesting, it was also a little clunky. It could just be my ARC copy, but the scene transitions were very choppy and sometimes I didn't even realize we had switched to a different character. There were a lot of POV shifts in this one. I liked Kera, Vig, and Brodie, but I've got to admit I wasn't really feeling the stereotypical sorority vibe the Crows had going on, at least for most of the book. This also read more like an urban fantasy than a paranormal romance -- there was some sex, but the focus on the characters falling in love was rather muted. I'm interested by this world so I will probably pick up the next book, but there were definitely some pacing issues with this one and it ended in a very strange place.

Sandra | 25914 comments Christal, there is another book about the same world but totally different characters that she wrote several years ago.

Hunting Season (The Gathering #1) by Shelly Laurenston might be worth you reading it to get the sorority vibe going. As well as the Gods, ravens, crows background. Its one of my favs, but then I do love SL's work.

Debbie, the page minimum is 200 pages. It does not look like that book will work. Sorry!

No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole
Finished: 3/18/15

Kaderin the Cold Hearted is a Valkyrie who hunts vampires. Sebastian Wroth is a vampire who did not want to be turned and has finally found his bride. The problem is she wants to kill him. The give and take between these two was fun. One of my favorite things about this author is the humor she interjects and the inner dialogue her characters have with themselves. It is very entertaining! I also love learning more about the Lore in each book. I will continue with this series.

I really enjoyed the mythology of this book, Kerstin. It was definitely something unique.

I've heard such good things about The Others series, but I have yet to start it myself. Hoping to get to it one of these days.

Kerstin | 862 comments Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson, #3) by Darynda Jones

Shelf: Paranormal Romance
Date read: 20/3/15
Rating: ★★★★

I'm not sure why it took me so long to pick up this third installment, seeing as only a couple of pages in I remembered how much I loved the previous two books.
Charley is a private investigator and grim reaper and one of the most hilarious and funny heroines I've come across in my reading adventures. Everything she says just cracks me up.

This time, Charley works on another case of a missing wife and in addition tries to deal with the situation surrounding Reyes that developed in the last book. She also learns more about her grim reaper powers, though only very much towards the end of the book. All the old supporting cast are of course still around, and hilarious and lovable as ever, and we also get introduced to a number of new characters that might make Charleys life even more interesting in the future.

All Roar and No Bite (Grayslake, #2) by Celia Kyle
Finished: 3/21/15

I enjoyed this installment in the Grayslake series. The story was entertaining with plenty of action, sassy humor and strong characters who protect those they love. Van and Lauren both had to overcome past issues and learn to trust each other. The chemistry between them was fun to watch. I look forward to the next book in the series and more shifter books from this author.

Mate Claimed (Shifters Unbound, #4) by Jennifer Ashley

Finished 3/21/15
336 pages

4.5 stars rounded down to 4

Wildcats, bears, and felines – oh my! I think that I am beginning to love sifters more than vampires – but not just any shifters! I immediately felt an attraction for Iona and Eric in Wildcat (book 3) when they met at the club. Eric now has his hands full with trying to convince Iona to leave the human world and move to Shifter town by taking up the collar. Iona is only half shifter and has lived her entire life disguised as a human. Eric also has to deal with a situation instigated by the humans who closed one of the rival shifter towns and are having the wolfs move into Eric’s pack. The wolf alpha and Eric are not friendly to say the least to one another. The wolf alpha would like nothing more than to mate claim Iona and overthrow Eric.

I love Jennifer Ashley’s writing style, but I thought by now I would tire of the series and pick it up next year. That is so not the case. To sum it all up, this is a fast sensual game of cat and mouse or in Eric’s case cat and cat.

No problem! I did not want for you to scramble and read a different book if you did not know about the 200 page minimum.

I have had that series TBR since it came out and I don't know what I am waiting for. It looks really good!

This was another 5-star read in this fantastic series. I love the world building in these books, the fascinating characters and the very detailed plot.
In this installment Meg needs to be even stronger, as she has to not only adapt further to life in the real world herself, but also in order to help the other cassandra sangue girls. Tensions between the humans and the terra indigene keep growing and some humans are now classified by the rest of their own species as wolf lovers and are discriminated against in daily life.
Really great book :)

Another fun visit to Lucky Harbor. So far, I have really enjoyed this series and feel like I know the gang. Leah and Jack grew up together and are best friends. Jack’s mom is depressed due to her cancer returning. In order to make Jack’s mom happy, Leah tells her that she and Jack are an item. They both agree that there won’t be any strings attached, but both end up falling for the other. Jack and Leah have obstacles that they must face and quickly learn that it is easier to face them together.

This series is winding down and so far, there has not been a book dedicated to Lucille, the quirkly 70 something Lucky Harbor resident. Lucille keeps the entire gang in check since she keeps everyone updated via Facebook. Anyone that is worth something in Lucky Harbor has been seen at least once in a Facebook posting.

Shelf: Shifter
Book: Kitty's Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn
Series: Kitty Norville #9
Date Read: 3/27/2015
Rating: ★★★ + ½

Review:

I was worried that I might have forgotten too much about Kitty's world to enjoy this one, but it was easy to slip back in. While I didn't love the storyline here and it seemed like most of it was just too easy, I did enjoy seeing Kitty, Ben, and Cormac together again. I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing Kitty beginning to assemble her army.

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee
Finished: 3/28/15

I liked this book and thought it was a unique perspective on angels by this author. The world building and characters are compelling but it felt like some aspects of the story were unexplained. Maybe the author intentionally left it that way to set up for the series, but I would have liked a little more substance. And the romance aspect between Raffe and Penryn felt rushed. I think this first book sets up the potential for a good series so I will probably read the next book at some point.

Shelf: S is for...
Book: The Winter Long by Seanan McGuire
Series: October Daye #8
Date Read: 3/29/2015
Rating: ★★★

Review:

This kind of hurts to write as October Daye is one of my favorite series, but I just didn't get all the hype with The Winter Long. This was supposed to be the book that the whole series was building up to... but... I just expected more. I definitely thought there would be some major revelations about Amandine, Toby, and their powers. Instead, we just learn that Toby has (view spoiler), neither of which really impact her life. The villian also came completely out of no where and started doing bad guys things without any explanation or motivation whatsoever. It was just like let's stop the bad guy from being bad just because they are bad... umm, ok. I did love the Toby/Tybalt scenes and the Toby/Quentin scenes. The strength of this series really is the connection that Toby has with her "created" family. I'm just really disappointed that this was built up as a book of revelations and, really, it just created more questions.
