Saar The Book owl | 2653 comments I've finished The Haunting of Hill House and it was really good. I loved the haunting vibe, the personalities of the different characters...

Kristie | 19313 comments I finished The Final Hunt The Final Hunt by Audrey J. Cole . I thought it was pretty good, but the author tried to up the pacing towards the end by adding a few "exciting" moments right in a row that felt unrealistic due to them being all dropped in at one time. 3.5 stars

my Final Hunt review

PattyMacDotComma Home for a While by Lauren Kerstein, brightly illustrated by Natalia Moore is the story of little Calvin, who is arriving at yet another foster home, feeling unwanted and angry. But Maggie knows what she's doing!

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments Trying again to read Shadow of Night. I started it last year and kept putting it down for other things because it seemed to drag on. I want to see how the story plays out, so it's going to be my next to the pool summer read.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I usually read only one book at a time. Since I discovered audiobooks I sometimes have one paper and one audio. I have no idea how I ended up reading 4 books right now.

Queens of the Underworld: A Journey into the Lives of Female Crooks
The Great Hunt
The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to be Calm in a Busy World
The Salt Path (after just finishing The Phone Box at the Edge of the World)

I do this too Peggy. Usually it's one audio and one book or ebook, but sometimes I pause on one because I'm not feeling it and pick up another, then maybe another to fit my mood of that day.

message 411: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I read one audiobook and one print book at the same time. But I've found some interesting books on strokes that I think I should read.

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey
Healing the Broken Brain

I like the title of the 2nd book because that's how I feel - broken.

My problem is that I read print books slower now, mainly because my attention span seems to have shortened. I go to bed at 10:00 and generally read till 11:30 -12:00. Now I'm putting down the book after 15 minutes.

message 412: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Exactly Laura! Before you know it, you've got a whole pile of unfinished books!

Sorry about the issues you're still experiencing Janice. Is your attention span the same throughout the day or better/worse in mornings or evenings?

message 413: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Everything is worse if I'm tired. I think it's more to do with the fact that I'm tired at 10:00 in the evening.

message 414: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19313 comments I also do that, Peggy. And I also end up with a bunch of unfinished books sometimes.

I just started Murder on Black Swan Lane for the group read. It also fits the yearly challenge for me, which is nice.

message 415: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ugh, the author of The Salt Path narrated her own book, but she really shouldn't have done so. She's hard to understand, lacks intonation, and her voice is whiny and depressing. Maybe I should have read the reviews.

I know I can return audible books, but have never done it. Also, I bought it months ago, not sure if there's a limited time to return books. And I do like stories about walks while I'm walking myself, and for that I need audio..

message 416: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19313 comments You should still be able to return it if you don't like the narrator, Peggy. Audible is usually very good about that. I think you can even do it right from your library on your app. Just go to your library, click on the three dots next to the book, and select return this title.

message 417: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Kristie! I'll give it one last chance tomorrow.

Audiobook - Murder on Black Swan Lane
Kindle - Death in the Sunshine

PattyMacDotComma I think readers who enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine are going to enjoy meeting Nita Prose's lovable Molly The Maid. She's a square peg who's much more genuine than most who fit in the round holes of the world.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I finished Murder on Black Swan Lane and now I'm refreshed and can carry on the series without trying to remember what went on.

I started Seduction in Death for the monthly challenge, and I can fit it into my annual challenge too.

message 423: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19313 comments I just finished reading My Wife Is Missing. It was pretty twisty. If you enjoy books that keep you guessing, you may enjoy this one.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am currently reading Murder on Black Swan Lane and The Lost Apothecary.

message 424: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I finished Death in the Sunshine on ebook. I will definitely continue this series. The next book is slated sometime this year.

I can't decide what to start next - The Prayer of the Night Shepherd is on my schedule. I've struggled with the last couple of books in the series. I'll give it a go I guess.

I sympathise, Janice. I get so annoyed with myself when I can't decide what to read next, although I have lists everywhere. I sometimes think I need a dartboard or a coin-toss game!

message 426: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma I loved the world/s of the characters in Gabrielle Zevin's latest, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. In games, you can get a new life, start over - extra tomorrows. In real life, they struggle like the rest of us.

message 431: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I read The Beantown Girls. I was all excited because I thought it would finish off one of my sites. Although the main characters are from Boston, it wasn't set in Boston at all! So I just have to chalk it up to another book read. Bummer. I enjoyed it - a much lighter WWII story than the usual fare.

I will start A Good Day for Chardonnay today.

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 965 comments I’m reading a book called See Him Die by Debra Webb

message 433: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I finished A Good Day for Chardonnay and really enjoyed it. I chuckled throughout. I can hardly wait until the 3rd book comes out, but I have to wait patiently till December.

I will start The Other People and hope I can get it finished before the toppler.

I'm anxious to finish the second badge because there are books I want to read but can't till I've started badge 3. I'm struggling right now with The Prayer of the Night Shepherd. I'll think of it as brain therapy and plow through. Got to get the side trip finished so I can move on.

message 434: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19313 comments I am reading Stay Awake. I had a couple of other books that I had planned to start, but decided to hold off in case we needed them for the toppler. I'm trying to time this one so it finishes just before the toppler. So far, so good. I'm 64% through and have a little less than two days to go. It's really good though and I'm dying to know what's going on so I hope it lasts.

message 435: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I almost started one but realized that I had earmarked it for the toppler.

Lilisa | 2770 comments I’m three quarters of the way through The Pope's Man set in the 1500s in The Vatican and Rome and enjoying it. Can’t wait to see how it ends. I’m also with my year-long goal The Complete Works of Rabindranath Tagore.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just finished The Night Window, the last book in the Jane Hawk series. What a ride! I was biting my fingernails most of the time in the first four books. This last one was not as heart stopping but still a good story and an interesting wrap to the series.

I am going to continue with People of the Book again now, for my yearly challenge and the first book for badge 2. I had a month and a half off listening to and reading series books.
I fell in love with Walt Longmire and his author Craig Johnson.

Such a great series! I had some difficulty keeping up with it towards the end because there was a bit of technical stuff and different people involved. I read it as they were released so I had to try to remember details after some time had passed. I think it would be best read in a binge.

PattyMacDotComma The Woman in the Library, by one of my favourite Aussie authors, Sulari Gentill, is a wonderfully tricky, multi-layered mystery where I think I suspected almost everyone, real and fictional. A great read!

PattyMacDotComma I was surprised to learn I was a bit mistaken about the significance of the actual date, June 19. The Juneteenth Story: Celebrating the End of Slavery in the United States by Alliah L. Agostini set me straight in this well-illustrated book for kids (and ignorant grown-ups like me).

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I haven't been posting here since the toppler started. So far, I've read The Diamond Eye and What She Left Behind. Both were very good. I started The Palace Job this afternoon. I'm also reading Every Witch Way But Wicked for the toppler.

I had to put the books I was reading aside for now.
