John I don't read a lot of popular, mainstream stuff; didn't want to double-count ones from other challenges either. So, here are a dozen titles I'm hoping to knock off my TBR list. I'll try to say something about each one as I post that I've finished it.

✅ January: Being Invisible: A Novel (fiction)

✅ February: Death on Nantucket (mystery)

✅ March: The Overnight Kidnapper (mystery)

✅ April: Death in Delft (mystery)

✅ May: Good Behaviour (fiction)

✅ June: Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year (nonfiction)

✅ July: Marrow and Bone (technically fiction, but based on a real story)

Death Is Now My Neighbor (mystery)

The Great Mistake (fiction, based on a real person)

The Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos (nonfiction)

Berezina: From Moscow to Paris Following Napoleon’s Epic Fail (nonfiction)

Carnivorous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger (nonfiction)

Alternates:

Eating History: Thirty Turning Points in the Making of American Cuisine (nonfiction)

The Coat Route: Craft, Luxury, & Obsession on the Trail of a $50,000 Coat (nonfiction)

The Visitors (fiction)

American Jihad: Islam After Malcolm X (nonfiction)

Good luck with your challenge John. It's great if you're able to say something about each book you finish, but not necessary - just do whatever suits you best!

Martha (marthas48) | 767 comments Great list!! I'll be interested to see what you think of them if you want to post that. I haven't heard of any of them, but find several interesting. I love mysteries and history.

I usually write some sort of a review, as much for myself as others, since I have a terrible memory for details of books read. In this thread, I would probably add a unique sentence or two about my level of enthusiasm.

ZOMBIE BALL and MAGIC SQUARE are in the Eli Marks mystery series, that I discovered from getting the first couple of titles are free audiobooks for leaving reviews - excellent narration! OVERNIGHT KIDNAPPER is my next unread one in the Inspector Montalbano series (set on Sicily) which I feel is far better as audiobooks! Only caution there is that a friend and I both felt the first story was a skippable dud. I believe the series is currently included for Audible Prime members.

I'm only familiar with your Inspector Morse and Montalbano series, although I do have to get more into them. I look forward to your comments on your selections. Enjoy.

Lea (leaspot) | 3755 comments John, this is a very interesting list, I will be eager to see what you think about your choices. I haven't read anything on your list - and that's always twice as much fun for me - I've got a bunch of books now to look into - some of which I haven't heard of before! :-)

Emily (readerlover1995) | 195 comments Good luck, John! I haven’t heard of any of those, but mysteries are my favorite! Enjoy! 🐾

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 238 comments Yours is the first list where I can say I have never heard of any of your books! I added 3, that look fascinating, to my TBR- Berezina, Marrow and Bone, and Mariposa Road. Enjoy your selections! I look forward to your comments/thoughts.

Thanks for the kind words. I fully intend to say something about each book.

Good luck and happy reading!

Andrea (andreabewley) | 19 comments Good luck with your challenge! Added Carnivorous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger and Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year to my TBR. Love stories of naturalists and their adventures!!

John One month down! In the end, Being Invisible fell squarely between "What a find!" and "What a slog!" with elements of both.

Angela (bookangel2) | 15 comments Good luck with your challenge, John. I've read the Colin Dexter. Having discovered his books when they were first published, I've read all of them and thoroughly enjoyed them.

John So much for February... Death on Nantucket will be getting two stars from me, as it was far more beach read/chick lit than a murder mystery. If that's what a reader wants, great, but was waaaaay too much of that for me, overpowering the murder angle itself.

Well, shoot! I'm not crazy about that type either. Hope your next one is more to your liking.

Hilarious! Sorry that it even came close to being a slog! As well as, Death on Nantucket. Cozies are hit or miss. I hope the next reads are better

John Finished The Overnight Kidnapper today - great catching up with Inspector Montalbano, but sad that it means only a couple of more books left in the series!

I have the advantage over you. Just have completed the first so far. :0)

John Just finished Death in Delft, which I wasn't sure about at first, but am now looking forward to the sequel.

Like Martha, except I am only on Book 2. I really did enjoy the first book, though. A lot more meat to it than just a typical mystery.

message 27: by John (new)

John Just finished Good Behaviour, which I'm glad I did as an audiobook - terrific narration.

message 28: by John (new)

John Just finished Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year, which was too butterfly-specific for me to recommend it as general interest.

Bonnie | 723 comments So Death in Delft looks like the only one you really liked. Any other's?

I said I liked Good Behaviour.

John Finished the novel Marrow and Bone for July - don't think it translated well culturally I'm afraid.
