ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments I read this book around 1986 from my school library and loved it. I think it was set during the Depression but may be another time in the early 20th Century. A young girl is told by a psychic or fortune teller that she will die when she's fifteen or sixteen (can't remember the exact age number). Throughout the book she has to grapple with her impending doom as well as her family's struggles with poverty. I think there's a boy she has feelings for, too. I remember this book was very moving.

Spoilers ahead:

She doesn't die but wakes up on her birthday and realizes that the "death" was metaphorical—the loss of her immature self... or something like that.

Would be grateful for any suggestions.

Rainbowheart | 28810 comments Do you remember if she lived in a big city, small town, or out in the country?

ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments I think it might have been a small town, but not sure. Not a big city.

Rainbowheart | 28810 comments Was the girl definitely a teenager?

Did it seem like a newish book at the time you read it?

ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments It was a long time ago!! :) But I believe it was a recently published book. And I think the girl is around 12 or thirteen at the beginning of the story and it covers most of her adolescence until she's a young woman.

ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments None of these are it, but thank you so much for the suggestions! The prophecy of her upcoming death is a huge part of the story.

ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments Not these either. It's possible the time period is not the Depression, but definitely early 20th Century. Thank you for the suggestions, though. I appreciate it.

Rainbowheart | 28810 comments Awesome, glad to help out!

What was so frustrating is that I knew I'd come across the book recently. It turns out that I added it to the Books Set in Missouri list a few months ago.

I was originally searching Worldcat for Great Depression books, but I finally tried "she will die" in the keyword field and it came up as one of the first results. I should have tried that earlier, lol.

ReadingIsFundimental | 12 comments Incredible. Thank you so much!
