Sad the man who lives at home,
Content with his hearth.

Inspired by Fernando Pessoa in “The Fifth Empire”

Embers in abandoned hearths
are no form of sentinel,
no shape of regretful centurions.

Embers in abandoned hearths
cry no creeds of heralds,
blast no notes of destructive trumpets.

Embers in abandoned hearths
aid neither judge nor jury,
subdue neither empire nor village.

Embers in abandoned hearths
testify to discontent,
to the joy of uncertain burial.

Dare I say that this is messianic piece, a vision of a non-violent, non-sectarian, non-judgemental future that glories in its anarchy?

So then what, pray, of the predatory wolves who leave no hearths behind?
