Yes...but how? It's been a long time since I've read the book and I forget whether it was the love interests or the plot that was worse.
The writing style was boring. The main character is mentally unwell cuz she was locked up for 3 years and had no contact with anyone so she’s kinda insane. So whenever the character was expressing her thoughts on something, the author would strike through the text to show that those thoughts were her inner feelings. At first the style seemed sorta unique cuz of the strike through but it got annoying after a while (and plus the author completely forgot about them later on in the book). Oh, and the author tried way too hard with the purple prose
The male love interest was bland as hell and the romance between him and the lead had no chemistry. I still don’t know why he and the girl fell in love cuz there was no buildup to it. They just fell in love, that’s it.
Oh and the power system is never explained. Basically the girl has powers where she can destroy anything/anyone she touches and there are others like her. But the author never explained why there are even powers in this world. And the worldbuilding was horrendous. We’re told that there’s some type of war going on and the faction the antagonist belongs to is ruling the world. But like, why is that the case. Like what happened to the world, why is this faction in charge, what happened to society, why the duck are there people with powers, etc
The only pro I can give this book is the antagonist cuz he was the only character I was interested in.
Oh yea, the setting was another part of the book I disliked. They basically stayed in the same building for most of the book and I was struggling to visualize it. The outside world just seemed like your typical dystopian world.
Damn, I really hate when the setting is bland. The whole reason I read is to experience new things and when the entire world goes unbuilt, I don't get that.
So, she's basically invincible and for no reason other than the author needed her to be in order to beat the villain?
Oh no no, the villain is actually another one of her love interests and he and male protagonist (the main love interest) can actually touch her without dying
Aw, it actually could’ve been interesting if the love interests couldn’t touch her. It would’ve made the romance have to work around the barriers of touch, which would mean that the romances would have to have emotional depth in order to make sense. Also, what’s so special about the boys that allows them to touch her when everyone else dies?
Lmao of course. That's prob why the author made it so that the ONLY people who could touch her were two attractive men.
I’ve finally finished Ruin and Rising, the third and final book of the Shadow & Bone trilogy and holy cheeseballs did it suck
Nah, the series is known for being your typical cliche ya fantasy. It’s probably Six of Crows that you’re thinking off.
Hiii I am Aliyah!! I have to add to your comment on one of my fav dystopians, shatter me. PLEASE KEEP READING THE SERIES. It gets so much better. The author explains that throughout the series you start seeing the cross outs less because the MC starts to open up and become confident. But i’ve heard a lot of people say they didn’t like that so like i get u hahaha. But also the love interest in the first book SUCKS. I don’t wanna spoil but he isn’t the main love interest and the series is an enemies to lovers soooo pleaseeee keep reading. I finished the the first three books so i am not completely done with the series yet but trust me. ANYWAYS, i had to rant abt that. My cr is one of us is lying, i’m only on chapter 4 but that’s also rlly good. :)))
Have any of you read they both die at the end? Everyone talks about it but it’s so boring. I been trying the longest to finish I just can’t.
Oh, I read that! It had an awesome premise, but I agree that the plot line got boring and it was kind of difficult to get through. The ending is pretty good tho, if you decide to get there.
Ahoy there! I definitely do plan on reading the rest of the series. I was already spoiled about Warner being the endgame love interest before starting the series so no surprises there lol. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why I decided to pick up the book cuz I’m trash for the enemies to lovers trope and the fact that the antagonist (or at least the antagonist for the first book from what I’ve been told) ends up getting the girl sounded intriguing to me. Glad that’s the case tho cuz Adam was like a stale cracker in the first book. I still don’t understand how he and the protagonist (I forgot her name😅) fell in love.
I ended up giving it 3 stars. I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the two protagonists and I never got the vibe that they were into each other
Also, Tara, one more thing… I was stalking your reads and saw that you have read the inheritance games. THATS MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER. I just finished the newest addition to the series and fell in love even more. I’d love to hear you thoughts, maybe it will convince Ananya to read it haha.
Omg, I love The Inheritance Games! Had a fun time reading that! It’s usually rare for me to love the entire cast of a book cause usually there’s at least one character I’ll be annoyed with but I was surprised to find myself loving the characters!
Aliyah’s got me hooked on One Of Is Lying already, but I’ll pick up the first inheritance games on Monday.
Ooh, also Tara, Aliyah introduced me to Zlibrary, which is an online platform where you can download a ton of these books instantly without even having to sign in
I was just going through you reads Aliyah and I totally forgot I read We Were Liars. I think I’m also gonna give it 2 stars. I remembered I was struggling reading that book and wanted to DNF it
Ooh Aliyah, I saw that you wanted to read The Cruel Prince. I binged read that series last weekend and now it’s a guilty pleasure to me!
AHHHH!!! I have never read any fantasy books and I don’t even know where to start. Kinda wanna start with ACOTAR after reading ananya’s review hahaha. I almost started the cruel prince and changed my mind. Another person told me about it and I was so intrigued. After one of us is lying I will start either the cruel prince or ACOTAR.
