Have you read this already, Richard? I'm about 100pp in and liking it a lot, although not your "typical" mystery.
I didn't think I would like this book as much as I did. I am not much of a Romance genre fan, and I originally believed the book would be too much Romance. Instead, it is a first-class, engaging mystery as well as a war story, although it doesn't go into too graphic detail about the awful and incompetent fighting of World War I.
Has anyone seen the movie? Here's a review from The Guardian, which I haven't read yet. Will wait till I'm finished with the book. I plan to get the dvd from my library also after I've finished the book. https://www.theguardian.com/theobserv...
I've just finished it and it was such a good story. I'm so glad I finally got around to it. It's well translated which always helps as well.
I just finished this a couple of days ago in audio and was left a little flat, so I picked up the print book I had started earlier and read the last two chapters. Much more satisfying to "see" the ending. Like April, I felt it was engaging on several levels. The lasting effect of the war I thought especially well done.
And Carolien, I also felt it was well-translated.
I'm glad I asked my friend for a recommendation since I'm certain I would have never read this otherwise!
Anyone seen the movie yet? I got DVD from the library and watched the other night. I thought very well-done and it helped me better connect with all the soldier characters. On the other hand, some of the more satisfying things from the book were changed up or omitted, which makes sense given it had to be compressed into a movie.
