Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett - TT8 BOM (starts 22 May 2021)
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
This is my very first Discworld/Pratchett book! Its taking me a little while to get used to his rhythm, but its getting easier and I think by the time I get to the end, I will quite enjoy his style. The snark is the best so far. I have a feeling it will be a while before I feel like I can develop any thoughts on the world itself.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I find them both likeable and interesting so far. Esk seems like a bit of an old soul, so I imagine they will get on well as we go.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
It's an interesting comparison, and I'd have to say the wizard magic does sound a lot more fun to me -- at least so far.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do? I have to think we all kind of knew that would happen. I imagine there will be quite a bit of punishment coming up once Granny gets her back.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
It sounds like the they we say whenever using a cliché or axiom; all those people out there in general. I do like the old, white men explanation as well.
5. Esk went ahead and did not follow Granny’s advice, and thought since she had a feeling she could get into the bird’s brain, then why not do it.
When you were a kid, did you jump off the swing, or touch the hot burner? If so, give us examples.
Do you think she learned something from it, or are we looking at shades of her future University life?
I was a pretty obedient child, although one that was encouraged to try a variety of things. Her thoughts that the rules in general don't apply to her is a bit scary to me. That attitude could serve her well as she moves forward, but it could also get her into a lot of trouble when she realizes it is not true.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I like Headology. It seems pretty logical. If you don't take into account people's ideas and beliefs you will not be able to help (or in some cases harm) them.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Her list is impressive. I am not sure I could have come up with such as exhaustive list at 8 or 9 years old. Even these days, I tend to be a jack of many trades. I like to fill in voids. When something needs doing, I try to figure out how to do it. I like being helpful, but preferably in a useful way.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think Esk is likely a product of her own personality helped along by her upbringing. There were hints early on that as the 8th child and only daughter, she got away with more than her brothers.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Very creepy. I just cannot understand how anybody can think of creatures or whatever they are, like that. It is ingenious
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
This is a very real topic at presen. Some people are really trying to fight to get the right to be who they really feel they are, that being she, he, they, it. Esk was ahead of her time or perhaps that issue was always very present but it has only started to be noticed now.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
She knew all along magic was not the solution, even though she was not aware of this knowledge.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
Yes. She is only missing her make up.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
He is really the boss and sounds quiet content with a bunch oglf Bananas, why would I want such happiness turned back onto something more complicated. He is a great character.
DQs Day 4 13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I like Simon. He reminds me of a philosopher. This is my first Discworld book so I’m not sure characters continue in other parts of the series but I am guessing that (view spoiler)
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I loved seeing them together. It was a good parallel between Simon and Esk working together. I love the idea that the older generations may change their minds about lore/society but it could take a little more convincing than the kids who haven’t had those ideas as deeply ingrained.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
I thought it was extremely satisfying. I like the acknowledgment that they may be differences between witchcraft and wizardry but that the idea could be thought to students together.
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
I gave it 4/5 stars. I really like the book and how it read but I wasn’t as drawn into it as some of my 5 star reads. I will be checking out more of his books. I think I’ll move through the witch line to start.
DQs - Day 1
1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I haven’t read a lot of fantasy novels so I’m still getting used to the world-building aspect. He’s a funny writer and I’m enjoying his style so far. This is my first time reading anything from Discworld.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
It seems like a cute but kinda bickering relationship. It’s like a relationship between a parent and teenage daughter. You can tell they really care about each other and am looking forward to how it develops. Seems like Granny will be a good influence to helping Esk grow.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I think it’s an interesting idea and curious to see how this goes. It does seem to be a trope you see in fantasy and he’s pushing that idea further. Granny being resistant to Esk’s wizard magic parallels what you see in the generation gap between gender roles in our society today. The older generation are usually more traditional and want to keep the status quo when it comes to men and women. I like that Pratchett is drawing that metaphor. I’m drawn to both types of magic and just interested in the world-building part.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I think it’s not surprising. She’s still a young girl and learning. It obviously didn’t go as planned. Let’s just say it was a teachable moment for her.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
There was a lot to choose, but I’m gonna go with Bad Ass.
Qs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
It's an interesting question, but I do probably agree with whoever they are.
I was a pretty boring rule follower, so I can't remember a time I did something I was told not to. Sad, really. I don't think she's learned a thing. I expect Esk will continue to do exactly as she feels/wants.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
So far the examples used are pretty accurate. It is interesting that everyone has their own version of it though. :)
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Sadly, I would probably be stuck with the washing and the sweeping. My skills don't mesh much with barge life.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I'm not sure it was a conscious decision, more just a wandering that she just continued. Probably some of the magic but she seems a pretty self sufficient girl, so no doubt that played a part,
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
They are probably a bunch of old dudes, and sometimes.
I was generally a rule follower, as long as the reasons for the rules made sense to me anyway.
I doubt Esk learned too much from it! Maybe a little though.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I like Hilda. And I like that she knows what works and does it. I’m a fan of the headology concept in general. If it works, does it really matter if it was a placebo effect?
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I am really good at helping people justify their not-so-good decisions! And napping.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think it was mostly an accident, and I also think Esk doesn’t really feel bad about leaving Granny and ending up on her own adventure. I think this is partly her personality and partly that she was frequently left to her own devices a lot growing up.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Yes creepy, but not really scary. They were too vague to be super scary to me.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Absolutely. Everything is shades of grey.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Honestly I don’t really know. Because it wasn’t supposed to I guess.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
Yes, all nine year olds are different.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I looooooooove the librarian, and the more I think about it the more I wouldn’t want to be turned back either. I like bananas.
DQs Day 4 13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I like Simon, and I think he might make a decent foil to Esk.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I loved seeing them together, and I loved how they actually got along pretty well after all. Too bad the younger ones aren’t quite ready to become less entrenched in their ways yet!
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
I was satisfied by the ending. I like that both witchcraft and wizardry will be formally taught at the university. Hopefully it works out alright...
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
I gave it 4/5 stars. I really liked it. I’m new to Discworld except I have read the first two Tiffany Aching books in the last few weeks, and I liked those a lot better, so this one just gets 4 stars. And yes I like them and will be reading the rest of the series, not just for TT/BOM.
1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?I am new to Discworld. I think it's hilarious. I appreciate how it doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet there are wizards and witches, and common folk. I like how the world is extreme - on elephants and turtles, and suddenly where they have to go is 500 miles away.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
Excellent. I appreciate how Esk turned her brother into a pig :) Granny is sort of the reluctant mentor, but it doesn't belabor the fact, which I also appreciate. It seems to follow tropes just enough to give us a good laugh, or a silly adventure (the eagle) without needing to know the history of it all.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
This is interesting. In an era where gender is much more questioned, I wonder if this dichotomy is a product of the time in which it was written - the 80s. That said, I prefer the witch magic - behind the scenes and with gentle nudging.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Who knows! It seems to be a combination of Esk's fate and her staff, which seems to have a mind of it's own!
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
lol,
I liked
"Yes," lied Granny, whose grasp of geography was slightly worse than her knowledge of sub-atomic physics."
I can relate!

DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
This is my first foray into Discworld. I’m not sure what I was expecting. Knowing that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett had co-authored a couple books and that I really enjoy Gaiman I was expecting Pratchett’s writing to be similar. And it is except I think it’s a little drier than Gaiman and it wasn’t until I found the audiobook that I really started to enjoy the book. Also what do Pratchett have against chapters? That was driving me a little mad and still does. It makes finding places to stop difficult.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
It’s a strange relationship. Granny doesn’t seem to know what to do with Esk, but she’s doing her best and Esk like many children just wants to know everything now. Not just what Granny feels is appropriate but “real” magic having that belief that real magic is fantastical and flashy and not in everyday things. Which seems to be driving Granny a little mad as Esk keeps demanding to learn the real magic and not just what the use of the various herbs are. To a certain degree it feels very standard mentor- student with the student wanting to know everything at once regardless of the reasons for the mentor to take their time. As a result I think Granny is a little overly cautious while teaching Esk and Esk really needs to learn some patience.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I think the dynamic is a little to gendered. There’s underlying tone that witch magic is about healing and balance and can only ever be those things. Whereas wizard magic is flashy and dangerous and full of instant gratification. As if the only doers in the world can be men. Ironically, I’m personally more drawn to witch magic, preferring to heal and provide care as I do. But the two magics feel so very gendered that I kind of liked the moment when it was asked why can’t Esk be the first female wizard. It really hit home that it was something never really discussed before and should be at some point because they’re going to have a female wizard whether they like it or not on their hands.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Clearly Esk is going to wake up, probably with a fair bit of remaining traits of the eagle for a while. But she can’t die otherwise what would be the point of the book? As for what Granny will say or do. I can kind of picture her telling Esk I told you so. She’d warned the girl that there would be consequences for overtaking the bird. Though given that one of the last scenes in which Esk was conscious she was losing her concept of self I do wonder if she’s going to wake up with amnesia or something as well. Which would probably throw Granny for a bit of a loop.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
My favorite quote is probably during Granny's fight with the tree and the tree asks: "Well? Who says women can't be wizards?"
DQs - Day 3
9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Really creepy and am interested in how they’re gonna play into the story.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I think that’s a tall order but really like the ambition. There are some conflicting values that make it difficult to overcome. It’s will be a challenge to find something that’s workable.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I have no idea. There might be something interfering with getting the magic to work.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
Not exactly, but I can understand why. An adult male author is going to struggle to get into the mindset of a little girl. It’s already challenging for any author to write from a child’s POV. It can come across as too mature or too childish. However, for this specific type of story, I think it’s more forgiving.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
Love the librarian. I think I would have liked to be turned back even though I like bananas.
DQs Day 2
Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I think it's probably just a reference to other people.
Totally agree with their sentiment.
I think it's true that when you're told not to do something, you wonder why not and do it anyway! That was definitely true in my case. I remember when I was younger, probably about 6 or so, we went to visit my gran and I saw the other kids climbing trees but I was told not to. I did it anyway and it felt amazing! Then the time came when I was supposed to climb down the tree and I couldn't! I was high up staring at my mum and I stared crying hahaha! I can't remember clearly but I think one of my cousins had to climb up and carry me down. Took me a while before I climbed another and can you guess what happened next? Yes, I got stuck again!
Esk probably learnt to be a little more cautious but I don't think that experience would deter her from taking more risks.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I think headology is pretty neat. It takes a certain level of prowess to be able to influence people like that.
Hilda is a pretty interesting character. I hope to see more of her in the coming books. Her version of headology is impressive as well.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I am not a fan of washing but I don't mind organising so I think I would definitely offer to do that. I also love cooking and baking and if there are any animals that need to be taken care of, I am your girl.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think she planned on venturing off for a little bit but then she accidentally lost track of where she was and just decided to roll with it.
I think her matter-of-fact attitude is mostly just her personality.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?

I think Esk is likely a product of her own personality helped along by her upbringing. There were hints early on that as the 8th child and only daughter, she got away with more than her brothers.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Yes, creepy.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I like how Esk questions this. Wanting to know both witch and wizard magic seems like exactly the kind of thing she should want.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
It seems up to now, her magic has mostly been of need, not necessarily want. She probably needs more training to control it better.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
She strikes me as a bit older in most cases. But I do not find myself thinking she is a grown up and not a child.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I don't think I would be content to not be a human librarian, but I do understand the librarian's opinion.
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I am new to his writing. The genre is not something I typically read. I have to say that I am enjoying the story thus far however.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I really like Granny Weatherwax. She seems like the kind of witch I would want to meet IRL. She seems wise but comical as well. It's hard to say I how I feel about Esk. She's young and as a reader I don't feel like I've learned much about her (besides that she really wants to learn magic).
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
Good question. I find it interesting how Granny is adamant that a female cannot be a wizard. As described by the book, wizard magic seems more about power, whereas witch magic seems more thought out and used only when needed.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I think the staff is going to play a part in getting Esk back, although I'm not sure how.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
I can't say that I've had a favorite at this point.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
They feels like people in general with that quote. But the way it keeps popping up throughout the narrative I'm inclined to believe it's something more sinister in this book. I do however believe that they're right about knowledge not being nearly as dangerous as lot of ignorance. Ignorance tends to breed intolerance and an unwilliness to be open to new ideas or possibilities. That just leads to a stagnating way of life and that's just dull.
Jumping off swings at it's highest point was a game with the kids I went to daycare with we all did it. Usually, when the adult can't give a child a reason that makes sense to them why they shouldn't do something they do it anyway and learn through experiences (most of the time) that it was a bad idea. I think she learned that there are limitations to magic. That borrowing is just that you borrow the body of the animal not try to take it over. But I don't think that Esk is likely to avoid pushing the boundaries when she finally does make it to University. I think she'll be a boat load of trouble both for good and ill.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I wasn't overly impressed by Hilda's version of Headology, or really Headology in gneral. It's brings to mind swindlers and grifters looking for easy marks in the crowd. Honestly, it kind of makes witch magic seem like nothing more than simply listening to people and letting them find their way to their own answers. Which kind of diminishes them from having any sort of power at all. Even Granny doesn't seem entirely sure if any of the charms or curses she knows actually do anything, and that's just sad. It's like saying all a witch is good for working largely in tune with nature never upsetting the balance of things (which one would think flies in the face of their ability to curse people) where wizards can do almost anything they want with magic.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I can cook, bake, mend clothes sort of. I honestly am not sure most of my "talents" would be very useful on the barge. I can play an instrument which the Zoon seemed interested in having Esk try. I'm good with direction if I know where I'm going. Generally, I don't think I'd be much use at all to the Zoon and would have been thrown to the Pike.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
Given Esk's adventure with the eagle I think she meant to leave Granny. Not just accidentally get lost, but just go and see what happens. The amount of trouble she's gotten into as a result is impressive. However, I don't think her attitude is a product of her upbringing, yes there are children that are very matter of fact, but she almost feels too grown up at points which leads me to believe it's the magic. There were a few instances while reading that I forgot she was only nine years old based on her attitude alone .
DQs - Day 4
13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
It’s looking like he’s going to play a big role later so I’m keeping an eye out for me. He’s got some abilities that are special and his perspective on things that are unique from Esk. Definitely an ideas guy. I think that will come in later with Esk’s growth. I can see them becoming partners or coming together in some things.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
Love them together. There’s a lot of yin and yang themes in this book, so their dynamics extends on that. Having them come together and having their mutual trust and respect is good to see.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
I like that they had to come together and the Esk getting to study at the university should be very interesting. Looking forward to what happens next.
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
It was 4 stars for me. Very enjoyable. I’m new to Pratchett’s work and don’t read fantasy often so it takes some getting used to. I do like that he’s very British haha. It really comes out in his characters and sense of humor.
DQs Day11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
So... I read the first two books before starting Equal Rites and it was a weird reading. I like the humor and how witty Pratchett is, but I still don't know exactly what to think of this whole "series".
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I was thinking Granny was a total scam, but now, seeing how she waited for Esk to return, and then doing stuff she didn't like to go find Esk I see she cares about the child and can actually be a good teacher/mentor. As she dislikes wizard magic so much, I'm excited to see how Granny is going to deal with Esk's magic.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
Yeah, since I'm new to Discworld I still have no clue about the differences, but until now, it seems to me that wizard magic is more interesting, but I want to know more about the women vs man debate.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
So first I thought she was going to be a total prodigy, Esk would achieve what Granny said couldn't be achieved, but well, I was wrong. I still think this experience is important to reveal some powerful side of Esk, and for sure she is going to come back to herself
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit?
"She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance."
"Granny was absolutely certain of one thing. Women had never been wizards, and they weren't about to start now." This quote feels like 'famous last words'
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
Someone, people, indefinite reference... Well, a little knowledge can be dangerous, but if someone has sense I don't think its a problem at all. Ignorance is the problem. And people being proud of not having knowledge, being proud of ignorance is dangerous.
I was a very calm kid, I never gave headaches to my mom haha.
Maybe Esk will think a little before doing anything reckless in the future, but only ~a little~. This is who she is, I don't expect her to stop following her feelings.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
Headology is interesting, I mean, is nice how your view of something changes your reality. But it also appears a lot of charlatanism haha
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Probably only cooking? Don't have a lot of skills who could be useful on a boat...
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
Totally accidental, but her personality is of someone who is curious and want to explore, go on adventures, so she didn't panicked when she realized she was not with Granny anymore.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I definitely agree with "them". I'm not sure who they are but the rationale makes perfect sense to me.
I think every kid has to learn from doing. It's a natural adult reaction to protect younger ones but I think trying and doing help children learn boundaries. I think Esk is experimenting to see what she is capable of and fears that granny's hesitation is holding her back from doing things within the scope of her abilities. I definitely think this type of behavior is a precursor of what she will be at school!
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I like Hilda and her version of Headology. I think she does things that she thinks people expect. Headology makes perfect sense to me. The mind is a powerful tool. I think the expression "mind over matter" holds a lot of weight and truth.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I love being on the water. Not sure what skills I could bring though. I'll be the person watching the water for unexpected objects (maybe I'll see some dolphins, whales or turtles).
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I definitely think she meant to leave granny. I think she feels like granny is holding her back and that she would be able to learn more on her own. I also think the staff is pulling her away from granny. Granny doesn't like the staff and I think the staff knows that. Esk's personality is a strong one. She's a decisive little girl with ambition.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
A little bit
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yeah, I like her way of thinking. If someone can forget all the prejudice against the other form, being able to unite wizard and witch magic is a strength.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
It appears her magic works better when she is not trying to do stuff, and she was also nervous, but maybe it was all to make her learn by other means.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I would expect a kid of nine years old to be more childish, but you can see hints of naiveté that remind me that yeah, she is still a kid. >/i>
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
Not wonderful, maybe cool. Turn me back, please, not a big fan of bananas, lol. Not being a human can be more peaceful, but there are so many things that only humans can do, so... NO to peace.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I don't know who "they" are but I do agree with them.
I was not that child no lol but my little brother was. She may have learned what not to do with borrowing animals but I don't think that will change her much and it's just a glimpse into her future.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I love both witches lol and I don't think either one is wrong with their different versions of headology.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I might offer to cook food. That's about all my talents.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think it's just her personality and yes I think she did mean to leave Granny on purpose. But not in a mean spoiled way. Just that she wanted her own adventure and to do things her way.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
They were creepy, but in and out so fast, I honestly didn't get a chance to appreciate the creepiness. I would have liked to have seen that battle.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I think sometimes we feel are forced to take one side or the other in arguments, and sometimes, there are truths in both side. I could see feeling very similar to Esk in this situation.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
It seems like her magic works best when she is not trying so far -- when she's asleep or just feeling emotions. I think she needs to have more formal training to have it work when she directs it.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
She's reading more teenager to me so far. I have to remind myself that she is only 9.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place? I love him.
DQs - Day 3 9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I think they are creepy. Not sure what they are up to at this point though.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Poor Esk. She must be so frustrated. It has to be bothersome to be told she can't be a wizard because she is a girl. I think it's interesting that she seemed to look down on witchcraft until it was attacked. I think she admires Granny more than she realizes.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I felt like she was trying too hard. Up to this point, she hasn't really been able to explain how she makes magic work. She just says she sees herself in the picture. Perhaps she wanted to show she could do magic so much, it prevented her from doing so.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I do think she acts like a 9 year old. She knows why she wants and doesn't want to be told things she doesn't want to hear. She wants to learn everything now. She is impatient. She hasn't reached an age of maturity to understand why things have to happen gradually.
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I'm new to the Discworld and it seems to be a totally mad and hilarious world to live in. There are no rules and everything is possible and can happen. I really like the humor in the book and the writingstyle is totally off, but that's what I love after getting used to it.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
Granny Weatherwax isn't used to children around her. Of course, she's a midwife, but that's it. She's used to living on her own. Esk is pretty mature for her age of 8 and she has a big mouth when she talks, but in a positive way. She's curious about the world and has that total openess in gathering everything that there is to know. I think Granny Weatherwax and Esk like each other in their own way. They grow fond of each other.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
In the Discworld it seems to be of big importance that men practice wizard magic and women witch magic, ad if women don't need to think and aren't smart enough. The balance is off as it seems to be that wizards are the more respected persons with the most power. To me witch craft is much more important than wizardry. You are more connected with nature than a wizard. I would choose to be a witch, with a little hint of wizardry ;)
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I've allready finished that part, but Esk was curious like any other kid would be. Granny Weatherwax came to the rescue as expected.
I liked that one too. There are so many funny quotes, but one of my favorites is also about the marzipan ducks.
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I think that Granny is talking about the other witches or maybe just the people in general. I think having a lot of ignorance is bad, but also a little konwledge can be bad too. It's mostly what you do with both.
I was a wild child growing up, so I did things that were a bit dangerous: climbing trees, jumping of things on the playground. Sometimes that child comes peaking again. Maybe Esk learned from it, but she'll always be tempted to do what is forbidden or just atractive, I think.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I think Headology is something like the fortunetelling of Hilda. It's more what you believe or your own perception of what it's told. Maybe it's not 'real' magic.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Realistic cat noises to chase away the mice.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think it's both: following her own will and not thinking about the consequences. It's more the innocent of a child's adventure. I don't think it's a product of her magic, but more how Esk is.
DQs - Day 1 1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I'm new to Discworld, I find the world interesting and intriguing, I look forward to reading more.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
At first I wasn't sure about Granny, but actually the more I read, the more I understood her character and now really like her! I think the relationship between the two was fun to read
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I have always been super interested in witches & Wicca, so I am definitely more drawn to this side of magic! I also love the emphasis on herbs / nature / animals etc
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I always thought that Granny would come to the rescue somehow, and Esk will hopefully learn a lesson on taking things a little slower
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
They = the majority. It really depends on the context, they do say ignorance is bliss after all!
I was a complete rebel and nightmare of a child who did the opposite of anything I was supposed to, so I'm sure if I was in Esk's position I would of also done the same. I definitely think she will learn from it.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I think headology is interesting, and even relating to real life, is kind of true.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Pfft, I'm not sure what skills I would bring really... Maybe making people crochet blankets?
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I thought she left Granny on purpose, because she has a little stubborn personality and just follows her intuition and almost doesn't want to listen to anyone elses way of doing things. I think that's part of her personality
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I thought that they were hard to grasp / imagine but that's probably the point. The nastiest things are unimaginable.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yes, I'm mixed race so I can definitely can sympathise & relate
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I think Esk hasn't got to grips with her magic yet, and doesn't know how to purposely harness it, it kind of just happens when she's not thinking about it too much.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I think she does come off as pretty young and childish in a good way. However I don't know how nine year old's act to be honest!
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I liked the librarian character, however I absolutely hate bananas so I would definitely not want to be an orangutan.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
They were very creepy.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I do sympathize with it very much as a woman.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I think the staff has a mind of it's own sometimes lol. I think she was trying too hard.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I think for the most part she acts her age. Doesn't want to listen to any adult. Wants what she sees as a simple matter to be a wizard. I have a 10 yr old boy and the only thing I can't really see him doing is purposely getting lost haha but every child is different.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I think he's great! But I would want to be turned back!
DQS - Day 413. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I think he will support her as much as he can. I think they've become fast friends and I think he owes her a bit.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I just love Granny. I really like them together and realizing that things weren't quite what they thought or should be.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
I think so! I really enjoyed it!
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
4 stars. I've read The Color of Magic and didn't really know if I was going to pick up any more disc world books. But I'm glad I read this one for points because now I want to read more and not just for BOM points.
BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)
Granny and the Archchancellor finding the staff and riding the broom together
But pretty much anything with Granny, Simon, and the Librarian!
DQS - Day 413. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I think Simon will be a supportive role for Esk. I'm not sure how I feel about him yet. He's definitely not my fav charater.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I enjoyed the way they interacted with eachother.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
It was a nice ending, but left open ended for more adventures. It concluded what was necessary for this book.
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
I gave it 4 stars. I am new to Terry Pratchett but have considered reading some of his work before. What I have read so far, I have enjoyed so I'm a little annoyed I waited so long, but I will be continuing with the Discworld universe (it may take me a while to get through it all though).
BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)
Basically anything with Granny in.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Not creepy exactly. They don't even really hit nightmarish for me even though they're supposed to be terrifying. Their motives are concerning and okay I will admit they did kind of unnerve me a little when they were speaking through Simon. But altogether their general master plan was kind of eh. I can understand most of it but in terms of actual stakes they didn't really do anything for me when it comes to the plot, they just existed in some form and when they did I was like "oh this is happening okay."
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Do I ever. I think in a way we've all been caught between generally opposed things and have to defend it from people that can only do one or the other knowing full well that it is possible to do both. But it's recognizing that not everyone can do both that makes the difference and while that wasn't the outcome for Esk it was still enjoyable to see her grappling with some form of it when it came up.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
She let her need to prove they were wrong get in the way. She was plenty focused, but it was too much focus? She wanted so badly to show the wizards that she could do wizard magic that she kind of gave herself a case of stage fright of sorts.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
Asking so many questions feels like a very nine year old thing to do. Wandering off and travelling downriver so far on her own, debating wtih adults? Not so much. Even a precocious nine year old is usually a little more aware of and accepting that there are bounds they are expected to be within and not just go off like she is an adult herself. It was this behavior that had me frequently forgetting she was only nine.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
No. Being an orangutan is a small price to pay for doing something you love.
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I read many of the Discworld books back before kids (my kids are in college now, so I guess I'm behind?), and sometimes since then. What I like is how he balances between goofiness and profundity, so that they enhance rather than detract from each other. You can read along and be laughing, and suddenly you get hit in the gut with an emotional punch.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
Esk is not completely believable as a child; I'm also reading some Beverly Cleary books ( Ramona the Pest) and the difference is stark. But I like the way Granny Weatherwax is committed to keeping the kid safe, but also to being treated well by the kid. And I like the conflict that Weatherwax has opinions on how some things should go, and Esk is going to barrel right through those opinions.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I'm not a huge fan of these kind of distinctions; I know too many women who would lean towards men's magic and vice versa. I know a lot of people and places like to think of things this way, and I think it makes for some happy (and maybe a bit smug) people and also for a pile of unhappy people who feel like they are the problem. I think the different types of magic are good for different things, but they don't feel particularly masculine of feminine to me.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Granny will fix it. Maybe she will have to ride another eagle to find Esk?
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
They are the people outside Bad Ass. They say a lot of foolish things. And it sounds like a wise saying, especially when you add in the back half.
I think my parents mostly told me things in ways I could trust, although to me it sounded like Weatherwax also knew what she was talking about. So I never thought I had to burn myself after looking at someone else's scars. And I think this is baked pretty far into Esk, that if she hears an answer she doesn't like she'll assume she knows better.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
Advertising is important! Understanding people is a great way to Win Friends and Influence People, which is a powerful skill and can be used for good or evil.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I got nothing. I'm pretty useless. Maybe I could teach them to read?
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I thought it was her personality, and part of the self-centeredness of children, which Esk has to a large degree. Maybe because she was the youngest for a long time, and then an only child during her time with Granny? So she has no sense of the effect of her actions on other people, or why that might matter, and she has complete faith that somehow people will keep her safe.
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Hmm, the Discworld books don't encourage me to worry much, so they were creepy but not frightening, if that makes sense?
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yes, because I don't think people ever split evenly along the ways "they" say people split. So having male and female magic probably works about as well as having blue-eyed and brown-eyed magic -- some people feel right at home with it and figure it makes sense, and other people don't fit, and some people can do both and find choosing silly.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work? I thought she maybe picked a poor demonstration that the university was set up to prevent, like the magic-proof doors. Didn't she try to magic them?
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I think she acts the way a child should act, but that the author wasn't really thinking of a specific age, so she moves around a bit in how she handles things.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
Almost all librarians are wonderful. In his place, probably not, but if I were turned into an ape but kept my own life I'd want to turn back.
Day 413. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
He didn't seem mysterious to me? He's a nice guy, bit too focused on his thoughts. He should just do what she tells him.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
It worked because it was funny but it's now how I think real people would behave.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
Since I think the duality is silly, I liked that people were able to work together. I was happy with the ending.
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
This is not one of my favorite ones, but I like Granny Weatherwax. It is one of the early ones, which in general are not the best, but as a reread I was happy!
DQs - Day 1
1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
If I had to base my Discworld experience on this book, I would not enjoy it. Luckily, I've started with a couple of the Death books and I've read the first two Rincewind books as well. I love the sarcasm and Pratchett's way with words in general. Just not very much in this one so far..
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
The relationship is what I expected of a master and apprentice, so to speak. Eager little brat and grumpy old witch. I'm just not really feeling either of them.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
A mix of both might be nice. So far, there isn't much to it, other than Granny believing that wizard magic is no good, and that wizards seem to think that witches dance around naked, probably under moonlight.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I wouldn't be surprised if Granny told Esk that she'd warned her and the brat didn't listen (which was of course to be expected from a young, enquiring mind that doesn't want to be held back), and I would also not be surprised if Esk forgot about this experience very quickly and did something else stupid soon.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
"What was the magic word?" - Will always and forever be true. And will too often be forgotten by a lot of people. I do like your quote as well. It made me roll my eyes hehe.
1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?

"What was the magic word?" - Will always and forever be true. And will too often be forgotten by a lot of people. I do like your quote as well. It made me roll my eyes hehe.
Starting with a Bonus question...“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
Are "they" the Powers That Be? I think they are referred to later :)
Well, it depends on what you're doing. If you are in polite conversation, a little knowledge might be okay? But if you are re-wiring your house, that's probably a deep knowledge type of task.
I loved to jump off the swing. It felt like you were flying for just an instant. That was probably the only really "risky" thing I did I think?
I'm not sure she learned anything from it. It seemed more that she really enjoyed it, and that Granny just rescued her, but no real reflection on her part.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I think "Headology" is hilarious - in that it's all inside your head - what's real and what's not. It's a good word to have.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Well, nothing like Esk! I can cook decent meals using random ingredients, tame most cats, and understand the rules of complicated games :)
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
She seems to act upon whatever whim comes to her. It doesn't seem that she thinks of leaving, but instead of what's always ahead of her.
I have an exam on Tuesday, so I started reading this BOM a little late.1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I haven't read anything from Pratchett before, so Discworld is new to me. I feel like he is writing as if there are no boundaries in the world, nothing is unlikely or impossible. I love that he includes a few sentences with observations or thoughts from figures/characters that aren't important to the main storyline, but adds a little extra "color" for the reader's enjoyment, such as the white cat and the eagle.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
Granny is an interesting character. She continues to deny that girls can be wizards, but she doesn't seem to mind teaching Esk witch magic, knowing that she might turn out be become something new. I haven't really gotten a good impression of Esk yet, but she seems stubborn, impulsive, and observant.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
Men and women in separate boxes of society, both with a set of expected skills isn't anything new. Neither is a character who will disrupt the world's way of thinking. I'm curious as to how Pratchett will go about doing it=) I don't have green fingers at all, so I'm more inclined towards wizard magic.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I suspect Esk will learn a lesson about thinking before doing, learning before jumping into things. Whether that lesson will stick remains to be seen. Granny doesn't seem too frightened for Esk, so I suspect she'll say something like "told you so..."=P
Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I do find them creepy! They are sort of a disconnect from the rest of the mood of the story.
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Sure, although I favor the witch..
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I'm wondering if it has to do with some wizard that is against her, or maybe the creatures from beyond. Or maybe she's just not trained yet in the way of the wizards.
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
The headstrong part, yes, I do think that might be a way a nine year old would act. I'm not sure a nine year old would leave Granny so much though to forge out on her own.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
Yes :) I love the librarian.
13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?I like him - he is a good balance to Esk's practical nature (he being more theoretical)
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I thought they were fun together. I liked when they were arguing, but then shared a cigarette.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
Yes, the relationship between Granny and the Archchancellor helped.
16. How did you rate the book? 3.5 - There were parts I really liked, and then some parts that were a little slow.
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
Yes, I think I'll try out more Terry Pratchett - at least Mort.
BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)
I really liked the scenes with Granny / when she went in the back door of the castle and talked with the washer women.

DQs Day 2
Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
This statement is not wrong..
I'm not entirely sure she's learnt from the experience. She was certainly a little taken aback by the fact that she forgot who she was but I'm pretty sure it won't keep her from doing lots of similar and other stupid things.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
There's a lot of truth to what we've learnt about headology in this book. Hilda and Granny may have different takes on it but I think there is merit to both of their versions.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Haha, her list was quite impressive! And the senior wife seems to have thought the same. I liked the idea of the Zoons, especially their Liar position.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think it happened by accident but she certainly doesn't care if Granny comes after her or not. She is completely in her own world and doesn't seem to consider anyone else. I think it's a mix of her already bratty personality with the addition of magic mixed in. But then, it isn't a secret that I did not like Esk since the beginning.

First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
Does anyone really know who "they" are?=P I'm inclined to agree with the statement.
I was the quiet, book-loving kid who didn't really feel the need to test boundaries=) Perhaps she learned something, especially about borrowing, but she is a child, and lessons learned are very easily forgotten at that age...
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I find Headology to be a very fascinating thing and fairly accurate in its theories.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge? Rowing, steering, cleaning, fishing, sewing, singing, cooking, washing, and probably a few more=P
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I don't think she was considering Granny at all when she went on the barge. Not even sure she knew it was a barge. I still haven't gotten a clear impression of Esk's personality. She seems very aloof, not prone to emotional outbursts of any kind, and only somewhat reflected about the things going on around her.
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
It is an interesting world. There is a surprising amount of sarcasm and ironic commentary in it. That is my favorite part
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
They are a study in opposites. They are complete opposites in age, personalities, magic. It is interesting how well they get along with so little in common
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I think I like wizard magic more. Witch magic is very connected to nature and kitchen magic, health and household. Wizard magic seems more generalized, plus they have books. I prefer books to gardening plants
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Granny will fix it, because she knows all about it. It will probably have some consequences, but I am sure they will deal with it
DQs Day 2Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
They as in society? Scholars? Witches?
And yes, I agree. Ignorance is more dangerous than knowledge. Even if you do not know everything, you should know enough about any situation or thing not go in without knowing what you are doing and messing everything up
Of course, she didn't follow directions. She is a child, they never listen :D
I think she might learn from it, but not fully. She will look back at it someday and come to a conclusion, but not this soon
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
We all do what we must to survive, so I don't think she can be judged for her interpretation of it. These days we call it placebo effect. Sometimes just belief is enough to feel better so as morally dubious as it is, it is not a bad thing
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I could.. sunbathe? :D
I am not sure what I would be able to do, but it would not be as impressive as Esk's list :D
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think she didn't realize how far she would get. It might just be her adventurous personality though. She might be too curious to care for what and who she leaves behind
DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
Not yet I don't, but maybe later when we see more of them
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I think that is a very progressive thinking, but it looks like others are not ready for it. There seems to be this idea that girls cannot be wizard and cannot be both, and yet no one knows where this rule came from or why. And in a world of magic, one would expect people to accept unusual things, so this conviction that it cannot be is weird
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Because she wanted to show off. So far, it has only manifested when she needed ti or to protect her. It is not a parlor trick, so I doubt it wanted to show off just because. Plus the house itself is saturated with magic and she had some dubious intentions towards that statue, so it must have protected it
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
Yes and no. She is very obviously a child in some moments, but more mature than a child in others. She still has that adventurous and fearless child spirit, but she is doing the whole adult "finding my own path in life" thing too. It is interesting
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I think I would like to be a librarian no matter what shape as long as I can read books :D
DQs - Day 11. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I do enjoy the puns and the use of the absurd to find the humor.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I like them both. I like Esk's hint of a stubborn streak and I enjoy Granny's ability to always seem like she knows what she's talking about when of course she doesn't. I am enjoying the balance between them of the young girl who thinks she can do anything, but still wanting to please her mentor, and the mentor who just doesn't know what to do with a girl who's every choice is outside her experience.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I'm more drawn to seeing if Terry Pratchett's commentary on the idea pushes towards how absurd it is to think that one's gender determines all. My 21st century brain gets all huffy otherwise.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I think that was a bit scary even for Granny. It felt like she expected something to go wrong, but maybe not that wrong. I think this proves how different Esk's understanding of things already is. She just doesn't think like Granny does.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
I enjoyed that one a lot as well! Definitely got a laugh out of me. Not sure if I had a favorite though. :)

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I am relatively new to Discworld. I managed to read the first two books in the series before starting this one in the past couple of weeks. I don't know if it is because I have already read the first two or because this book has a different tone, but I like this book better than either of the other two.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I like both the main characters. Esk seems precocious and about what I would expect from a girl with seven older brothers. While Granny feels like a grumpy old woman with little patience for others. I like the way they interact.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
Men skills versus women skills feels like a classic battle. I like the idea that magic can present itself in different ways depending on if the magical person is a man or a woman. I, too, am interested in seeing how this plays out in the Discworld.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I am not good at guessing what will happen next. I assume Granny will use this opportunity to instruct Esk on a better way of managing her borrowing.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
That is a very funny quote. I don't have a unique one, but I did like several that have already been mentioned in this thread.
