Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) 1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?

I'm still relatively new compared to others but I love his sense of humor. He definitely can build a world and make you see it. I hate with a capital HATE that he doesn't do chapters. It's hard for me to just stop in the middle of the page and I've gotten slightly more comfortable with it but it's a huge pet peeve of mine.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?

I think they respect each other but they may also push each other off a cliff. It's a balance.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?

I've gone a bit further than Day 1 BUT I think witch magic is more practical and wizard magic, they're just making up as they go along.

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?

I think Esk is in for Granny yelling at her whenever she gets back. But I also suspect this will start to show how powerful Esk really can be.

Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.

I finished the book before answering but one of my favorites from the whole thing is “The entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks.”

DQS - Day 4

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?

He was a bit of a cipher as a character really. He's got enough curiosity that he'll work with Esk to explore her ideas, which is good.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?

They were a great odd-couple buddy movie waiting to happen!
I thought the side effects of the fight were interesting - around Cutangle the table had started to grow and the area around Granny had melted. Weren't they transforming themselves, so surely the effects of magic around them would be tied to their actions - i.e. you'd expect witchy-magic to result in the plants rather than the melted stones?

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?

I like that Esk gets to study at the UU, and hope witch magic does make a showing. You can also see seeds of ideas he reuses elsewhere (power of belief manifesting things being a key one)

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?

I like the book, but it's not one of my favourites.
I realised when I started reading it that I've not read any Pratchett since this time last year, which is an unusually long time between rereads for me, and I missed it.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)

Not a scene per se, but I think you can tell Sir Terry for a Brit, with his evocative descriptions of weather. I'm not sure any country does rain in all it's glorious variants quite as well as the UK, and Terry certainly does justice to it in the epic storm!

9. What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I guess they're creepy but even the creepy stuff in Discworld I don't actually find scary because the books are so whimsical.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yeah, like I said before I think that really it's like the same thing because we do sometimes see witches do 'flashier' things that look like wizard magic and vice versa so I think that really they're just putting themselves in their own boxes.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Maybe she was just too nervous.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
No, I think she really acts like a mini-adult most of the time, which is something you can say about a lot of kids in books because otherwise nothing would ever get done I guess.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I would definitely want to be turned back but that's just me lol Glad he's happy though.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Day 2

Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?

42? Honestly, I rarely agree with they. Whoever said it's old white men, I'm on board with this.

5. Esk went ahead and did not follow Granny’s advice, and thought since she had a feeling she could get into the bird’s brain, then why not do it.
When you were a kid, did you jump off the swing, or touch the hot burner? If so, give us examples.
Do you think she learned something from it, or are we looking at shades of her future University life?

I was a goody two shoes most of the time. If I was told not to touch something, I usually didn't do it. I was scared to jump off the swing because I didn't want to hurt myself or get dirty. As such, I'm a big rule follower as an adult which is kind of annoying but how do you undo 43 years of rule following!!

I think Esk is gonna do what Esk wants to do and damn the consequences.

6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?

As a former headologist (therapist), I love the idea. I think it speaks a lot to how people approach the world and how hard it is to do something new, especially when it contradicts your world view and what you believe to be real.

7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
I could listen to the crew complain about each other, start some sing alongs (badly) and maybe rustle up some grub.

8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?

I finished the book so I'm going to skip the first part of this question but I think that Esk's personality is showing through here. She is going to do it her way, even if someone tells her no, because it's what she wants to do and get out of her way. Personality all the way.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Day 3

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I don't want to talk about them anymore. Hold me. They're super creepy.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

I think we're seeing a nature vs. nurture battle here. Esk was given wizard powers right after her birth but was brought up as a witch so the duel we see internally, I think is going to continue to play out until she learns how to better control her wizarding and even then, she's going to struggle.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
No one has helped her figure out what to do with it and what to look for. Maybe it did work, just no one knew what to look for so it appeared to not work.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
She seemed to be more like a teenager or at the very least a pre-teen than any 9 year old I've ever seen.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
PLEASE LET ME GO HANG OUT WITH THE LIBRARIAN!!!

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments DQS - Day 4

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I'm sure he'll be important in some way since he seems to be able to make new spells and that's not something many people can do. I think I would have preferred it if it turned out how actually was 'better' at being a witch or something like that because overall I don't feel like Pratchett did enough to disrupt the strict gender roles here but I do plan on continuing with the series so I assume I'll see more of him in some capacity.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I liked their interactions and I think that they really ended up learning a lot from each other.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
It was okay, I'm glad they decided to [maybe] let more women into the university in the future, although I'm not sure if he ever actually follows through on that in later books.

16. How did you rate the book? If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
This is the earliest book I've read except for the very first one and I did like it more than that, but overall I think he probably gets better over time. I've said many times that I don't think he really did enough to challenge the strict gender roles of the world but I'm trying to be generous and realize this is a book from like 40 years ago and was probably pretty groundbreaking for the time. I rated it 3 stars because I thought it was good overall but there were several things like that that annoyed me as well. I do plan on continuing with the series though so I guess I'll see if my opinion changes moving forward.

Tammie DQs - Day 3

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
The scene was creepy and dark to me. I did have to read it a few times as I couldn't keep up with the descriptions.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
I think as a young person it's natural do wonder in general and here Esk is, thrust in to a situation where there's all forms of bickering about 'witches vs wizards'. tsk...tsk...tsk

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Perplexing...perhaps she wasn't ready or perhaps the type of magic needed for this situation must come from a special person.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I do not...I think she seems more like a teenager to me. Perhaps in this dimension it's the equivalent?

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
The librarian is a fun character. I'm not sure...swinging around all day and night does have it's appeal.

Tammie DQS - Day 4

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
He's an 'idea' guy...this quality will be helpful I think to Esk as she grows into herself.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
Way out of my zone...I had to reread this section as well. Very odd pair I think.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
Satisfying, yes. Anytime real positive change can happen for the better it's a very good thing. I'm not sure how satisfied I was with this book...it's my first...wondering if I should have started with #1 because I will admit I'm floundering a bit.

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
This isn't my typical genre and I'm not certain I'll stick with this series...but I am going to try a few more...will definitely read for BOM as I feel like I did make it through the 1st, why not try for a few more. I rated it 4 stars as I thought the theme shear genius really...Pratchett's writing seemed very 'real' despite the fantasy of it all.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)
Can't say I had any favorites scenes but my favorite characters were Granny and 'the Librarian'...don't you think the librarian is trying to say 'book' when 'ook' comes out? I just wondered about this.

Melindam | 8611 comments Tammy, Granny definitely stole the show from everyone around her. She's quite amazing. :)

message 161: by Sammy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13284 comments 9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

I started reading Stephen King at 7, so there isn't much that I find creepy any more, lol. Mostly I have a thing about creatures that attach themselves to ceilings, and there's not been any of those here, thankfully! :D

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

She has a bit of both, so can see the arguments make no real sense, but as others have thrown up such clear battle-lines, she has no choice but to feel conflicted no matter which side she's talking to.
It seems much like what children go through during a bitter divorce. The parents may come to hate each other, but they forget the child doesn't (and shouldn't!) always feel the same.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?

Because she was trying. Her magic has always only worked when either she wasn't thinking about it, or her emotions overruled her brain.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?

No. I always saw her as much older. I have to keep reminding myself she isn't a teenager.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?

well... I do like bananas...

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?

I like to think he'd be like (yet another) older brother to her. With less hair-pulling and more help with magic.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?

I love the interaction between the two of them. I could even - had their situations been different - have seen them enjoying a somewhat closer companionship. Granny would definitely have been the one wearing the trousers in that relationship though!

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?

I think the idea that the divide between the two is mostly just in people's heads was pretty well done here. you saw witches and wizards do much the same thing in the end. Turns out there's not as much difference between a staff and a broomstick as they would like you to think.

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?

4 stars for me. Very enjoyable, but not one of Pratchett's best.

I get something new from these books every time I read them. My rating in this case hasn't changed, but neither has my enjoyment!

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)

Granny and Cutangle in the boat. And Granny's trick of walking between the raindrops (I really need to learn that one!).

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
No i didnt. I am more influenced by what I see than what i read, unless it is Stephen King then I get spooked out.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
There really is no bad side as they need to co-exist. I just dont like one side thinking they are better than the other.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Maybe its not the right time for the universe to let her? Or it can only be done in the presence of those who believe.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
i think she seems older but at times childish and that could be from living in an isolated place without much intereaction with others her age.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
Like the librarian. I wouldnt want to be turned back. Think he is having lots of fun,

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?

I think that Simon will support Esk in the future and I could see them becoming somewhat of a team.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?

I really enjoyed how the both worked together and how the Archchancellor ended up listening to Gran’s advice without a fight.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?

I loved the ending! I also appreciated how they asked Granny to come back to teach courses.

16. How did you rate the book? I rated it 4 stars.

If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?

YES! I was pleasantly surprised and honestly reluctant to pick any of the books in the series or by the author. I now want to read every single book in this series!

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)

I loved the scenes with the librarian. He made me laugh so hard and felt that it was a nice addition to the story. I also cracked up pretty hard when Granny was figuring out how to drive the boat. Does the pointy part go to the front?

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

Um, absolutely. They need to stay in their world and stop creeping on ours!

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
She's stuck between two worlds, and exclusivity of them is really unfair, because she belongs in both!

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I think maybe one of the wizards did something, perhaps with the sweets, to make her magic not work so she couldn't stay. Perhaps because they don't want females around?

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I don't know any nine year olds who could handle what she deals with. But to be fair, we have it much easier than a fantasy world without electronics and air conditioning and grocery stores.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
He's entertaining for sure.

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
This is my first experience with Discworld. So far, so good.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I love Granny - she's hilarious. Esk's personality isn't coming out much yet, other than she can be stubborn and headstrong.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
Hopefully Esk will find a way to blend the two different types of magic.

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Esk is definitely in trouble!! I'm sure Granny will be livid but relieved to have her back.

Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
"Granny scratched her chin. She remembered the little lessons all children get taught: what's the magic word?

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

Yes/No;), I do think they need to stay in their own little world.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

I feel maybe shes stuck between both. I rather see her as a witch but its not part of the plot. Maybe I will have to read a few more of these series to see.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?

I'm sure one of the wizards did something because they don't want a female wizard ??

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?

I honestly don't think a 9 year old can handle it without their tablets or phones. But Esk lives in a Magical world, I rather have that then iphones. :)

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
They are creepy, then they are not. There is just something off, I just can’t figure it out yet.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yes, I do sympathize with this view. Even taking away the gender issues, it still calls upon the logic that something has to be labeled to be valued.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
I’m not entirely sure. It states later she reflects that often her magic works when she is angry, and she probably would have been nervous. Other times, it happens when she’s not directly thinking about it, like while sleeping, or as she’s counting the 18 herbs or goat diseases. So on one hand, I believe she just hasn’t learn to control it yet, and the other, I feel something more evil is at play.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?
I like how we forget her age at times, she’s just so open to the experiences so she can reflect and solve. Yet her lack of experience is what leads to some of her actions, making apparent her youthful age. I think she acts then as any 9 year old in her situation would act.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I would like to be turned again, rather than locked into one form/being. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to never know who or what you will be next and enjoy all the new experiences? Although I would always want to eat bananas, no matter what form.

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
I'm a huge fan of Pratchett and adore all his books. I really love the fact that he tackles some pretty serious topics but puts that signature silly Pratchett twist on it. My absolute favourite thing though is that even if I am having the worst day ever, Terry Pratchett cannot fail to make me smile.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I love Granny although I forgot how much even she grows and develops over the course of the series. Honestly Esk would get on my nerves with her disobedience but I'm not really a kid person haha.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I hadn't really thought about there being 2 kinds of magic in this way but it does make perfect sense really! I love the animaly foresty magic of the witches but I have to admit, the wizard magic is pretty cool and slightly more useful in some ways!

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I think Granny is going to be quite annoyed that Esk went too far even when she told her not to but I don't think she will be very surprised either. I expect that's exactly something young Granny would have done. I think she will do something very clever and fix it all while teaching Esk a lesson in the meantime.

Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.

Ahh there's so many good ones!
"Do you know how wizards like to be buried?”

“Yes! ”

“Well, how?”

Granny Weatherwax paused at the bottom of the stairs.

“Reluctantly.”

Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?

Well...y'know...THEY....THEM...people...but mostly Granny herself haha. I absolutely agree with the quote though, ignorance is a very dangerous thing.

Honestly for the most part I was a very well behaved child and just did as I was told/advised. I think Esk will have learned an important lesson about Borrowing and listening to Granny but I highly doubt that she will change her ways. I think she will absolutely be the kind of wizard to get herself into trouble trying dangerous things she's been told not to.

6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
Hilda is great and I like how the different witches have slightly different ways depending on the local people and culture. Headology is brilliant and absolutely how most things tend to work.

7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Honestly most of my skills would be fairly useless for barge life haha. I could be helpful for any animals on board otherwise maybe some basic sewing??

8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think I must be getting old but I totally feel for Granny being given the runaround by Esk. I think it's mostly Esk's personality and youth making it so she just doesn't really think about other people, hopefully she will mature a bit.

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?I didn't really like them - just because I liked the rest of the story more I think. But I do find them creepy.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)? I think its great that she defends both - I do sympathize with the view - it's cool to find good things in opposing viewpoints

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work? I think she just got nervous?

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting? Maybe sometimes- but she IS an unusual child. She's probably more driven and responsible than the 9 year olds I know

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?

I am new to Discworld and I love Pratchett's humour! I find the writing style to be easy to read. The world is a little confusing, but I'm sure as I read more, a lot more will become clearer.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other? I hope they become a lot closer. Granny still seems hestitant towards Esk, but they bounce off of each other.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to? I think it's still too early to say. I'm looking forward to reading more about the different kinds of magic. So far, witch magic doesn't seem too bad, I wouldn't mind learning it.

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do? I think Granny sees potential in Esk. I hope she starts teaching her more about the magic she was born to do.

Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.

There were a few quotes that I liked. I don't remember the exact quote now but the one about knowing more than others is a kind of magic resonated with me. And basically the whole first page or two :P

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

Definitely. So creepy.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

Yes, I liked her defending both and wanting to learn both and questioning why she couldn’t do both.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?

At the moment so is not in control of the magic and when it happens. It’s been pretty instinctual. So Esk trying magic on command, didn’t work.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?

I don’t think she’s a typical 9 year old. Children are usually shown to be behaving older than their age in books. She is still a child in some of her thinking, but older too.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?

The librarian had a perfectly good reasons for not turning back.

Starting with a Bonus question...
“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?

They, them, all those other people who have said things that no one claims to have said, but we all know they have. As they say, some of what is said may have a grain of truth to it.

I don't remember having a lot of 'don't dos' as a child. I did take some risks, but most of the time, I chose self-preservation over adrenaline. I think Esk will continue to push as many boundaries as she can. She seems a bit like a risk-taker and is learning there are real consequences, but also some artificial rules. The only way she knows to figure out which is which is to try.

6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?

Headology sounds a lot like common sense. One has to have a good feel for where another person is in their mind to know what to offer them. It certainly is a good principle for most salespeople.

7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?

I am not sure which skills I could bring that would be useful on a barge, but I am pretty good with other people's kids and most of those kids tell me I tell a good story.

8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?

I think Esk was just moving forward. She has a destination and she is going to march on to it. I don't think she intentionally left Granny, but I also don't think she stopped to think about reuniting with her either.

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?
This is my second book by Terry Pratchett. Although I am not a huge fan of fantasy, I do like the Discworld characters and setting descriptions. I’m not a huge fan of the writing style (I miss having actual chapters) but I enjoy the humor and the fact that I never know what to expect next.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
I like Granny’s witty sarcasm and the way she recognizes how some things are not always as they seem. Esk is quite cute, I like her interactions with Granny and her natural curiosity.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
I like both equally, I think they complement each other. Ideally a person would have a bit of both in them.

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Yes, she went too far and took a huge risk. Esk is so young though, I was expecting it. I think Granny will be worried and angry, and she might need to be stricter with Esk in the future. Or she will have to explain things in greater detail in relation to magic.

Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
“If a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing badly” Granny says to Esk. This made me laugh.

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy? I think they are very creepy.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)? Yes, I sympathize with her. The views of each schools of magic are opposite and it's hard to make the opposing thoughts work together without contradicting the other too much.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work? Because she was trying too hard. She expected to fail, and so she did.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting? I'm sure there are nine year olds that are as mature as Esk, but I think she is an anomaly. I didn't see her as nine, but as 12-14.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place? I wouldn't want to be an orangutan, no matter how many free bananas I could have.

Tina Reads | 582 comments DQS - Day 4

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)? I liked Simon, for a gawky teenager with a stutter. He was kind to Esk. I think presupposing that they will end up together in a romantic relationship based upon this adventure is a bit of a stretch, especially considering their ages. I think if anything, she would be one taking care of him, but he might gain some common sense after all of this.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions? A lot of this book is about how opposites react to each other in stressful situations, and their interactions are no different. Of course they found common ties so that they could trust each other enough to get things done.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded? I wasn't satisfied with the ending at all. Ants? Really?

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion? On re-reading, I give it four stars overall, for the dive into feminist issues that I didn't really think about the first time around. I never liked the Witch and Wizard novels as much as I did those of the Guards and Death novels, and that doesn't appear to have changed.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :) I thought it was hilarious when Granny and Esk made it to Ankh-Morpork and Esk was commenting on the nice women who had all those men visiting at all hours of the night.

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?
I liked Simon, he was kind, and quite clever. I wonder if his theories will end up upsetting discworld or perhaps leading to the discovery of new worlds (That bit in the sand world made me think of different worlds). Hopefully he will remain a good friend to Esk.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
This was one of my favorite parts, I loved how Granny managed to turn his ideas on following the Lore. I really liked their interaction, they were fun to read.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
I liked the ending regarding bringing the two ideologies together to the university. I quite liked the idea Granny had on teaching more practical things to the students (although it seemed like she was just looking for some free labor to do some cottage improvements...)

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?

I gave it 4 stars, I liked the characters, the word play and the comedy, but I just didn't get the sandy world business and Simon's explanation of magic, I just wonder if it will be important later. I will continue reading to see where everything goes.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)
I really liked the scenes with Granny and the Archchancellor, specially their trip to find the staff.

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

I absolutely find them creepy.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

Sometimes. I do find it important to understand multiple sides of arguments and to see problems from a variety of angles. My opinion can change (or at least my vocal opinion) depending on the position of the person with whom I am speaking.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?

I liked Granny's opinion. Esk was trying to hard, jumping around in the water while trying to catch a fish.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?

While I am not sure she acts much like a 9-year old Earth child, I have no experience dealing with Discworld 9-year olds. I agree that she does present a little older than I would expect a child of 9, she certainly acts like an immature magical person (with as much experience I have of that.)

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?

The librarian is fantastic. I do not know if I would want to change back or not. I think for a short time, it might be nice to not worry about the big problems a librarian wizard might need, but in the long term, I think it would not be as fulfilling.

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?

To me he seems very much like a magical theory man. He will probably write and publish loads of books. On the other hand, Esk seems to be about practical magic - maybe Simon will help her theorising what she is doing.

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?

These were among my favourite scenes actually, Granny and Cutangle growing to understand, acccept and possibly respect each other's magic. And the way they also considered each other not only by professions, but as human beings.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?

The Granny-Cutangle angle was concluded very neatly, but I could have done with some more details concerning the future of magic where Esk - Simon were concerned.

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?

Originally, I gave it 3 stars. On re-reading, I felt it was more than 3, but less than a clear 4 stars. I enjoyed the book much more this time, but it is still not a favourite Discworld book even tough it introduces Granny W, a shining star among DW characters.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :)

Granny very much stole the show in every scene she was in, but my favourite scene was possibly where she stopped a thief who stole money from her and made him give her back considerably more than he originally took and then...

"By nightfall Granny's description was circulated to all the chapter houses of the Guild of Thieves, Cutpurses, Housebreakers and Allied Trades, with strict instructions to avoid her at all costs."

This made me laugh out loud.

Suzanne | 5435 comments DQS - Day 4

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)? To me, Simon is one of those who dreams up powerful things and doesn't think about the consequences - not evil just...doesn't think. I'm not sure about the future - I think they will at least communicate. Esk is at least more about the real world and I think she's more powerful than Simon really

14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions? The part I remember the most was they had a Wizards Duel like in the Sword and the Stone cartoon. I loved that. And I like that Granny would have won.

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded? I thought the conclusion was the least satisfying part of the story. I'm not sure why - things were resolved. But in general I like the beginnings and the "Hook" of Discworld more than the endings.

16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion? I gave it 4 stars. Same as when I read it several years ago. I think I found more funny things this time though.

BONUS: Any favourite scenes? :) I liked all of the scenes involving the staff. And the duel between granny and the wizard. And, I loved granny's impact on the city! ,

“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I think “they” is a general way of referring to what old adults have been saying over the years. I think ignorance can be very dangerous in some cases, depending on the circumstances and the person.

I was a normal kid who occasionally got into trouble, more along the lines of forgetting to do things I was supposed to do. I think Esk learned a lesson and she will at least try to follow directions. Her life at University may show that she is extremely inquisitive and adventurous. This will get her into trouble as she gets older.

6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
She reminds me more of a gypsy than a witch, and she's just as odd as Granny. Headology is an interesting notion, showing people what they want to see. It sounds like manipulation or present-day marketing tactics.

7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Her resume was very funny. I’d volunteer cooking skills.

8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I think it was an accident. Both Esk and Granny are very naive in many ways and they’ve always lived in a tiny village. Esk’s attitude is a part of her personality, but she’s so young it’s really hard to tell. It makes me wonder how magic will affect her when she gets older.

1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?

This is the first book of the Discworld series for me. Not having chapters can be quite confusing, but I am slowly getting used to it. As I'm only about 25% into the book I can not say much about his writing style. I enjoy it so far.

2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?

Esk seems older than she really is and quite rebellious, which makes for an interesting dynamic. Granny is your typical grandma who knows best.

3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?

It's a good way to keep in mind that women and men are still not seen as equals everywhere. I find both types of magic quite interesting, but it is absurd that only men can be wizards. I do hope that premiss changes as I read further along

4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
I guess she will get in more trouble as the story moves on. Both Granny and Esk seem quite stubborn, so there's bound to be some more trouble ahead haha

As for the bonus, I did not highlight any quote so non comes to mind.

13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?

He strikes me as a philosopher of magic. I liked the scene where the two older wizards acknowledged that Simon had the answer, but they had no words to describe it. I think Simon may be able to help Esk use words to explain the new concept of women wizards and how witch and wizard magic can work together.

It felt a bit like they were flirting! The duel was fun. I wonder where they go from here?

15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?

I thought the ending was a bit HEA for what this story was, but knowing there are more books to come, leads me to believe it may be deceiving to believe that wizards and witches are just now going to be equal and work together all the time.

9 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?

Not really, but maybe if I could remember back to my first encounter (in the books! In real life I would be terrified, obviously,) with them I would. Discworld doesn't really do horror, thank goodness.

10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?

Yes, I think it's good to be free to mix things up. That's where innovation comes from.

11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?

She's not tried to perform magic under pressure before, it's mostly just happened. Nerves, and I don't think she has it under control yet.

12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine year old acting?

Getting kids right in fiction is hard, especially when they aren't in a context that we recognise when we think of kids the same age. I think Esk is a pretty good representation of a nine year old if you bear in mind the different kind of society she comes from.

As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?

The librarian is indeed wonderful, and I don't blame him for wanting to stay an orangutan. I don't know that I'd want to though.
