Abdelali “In no other industry is the role of chemistry more apparent than in the petrochemical industry”. (ALLAN B. COBB#6) The resourceful book “The basics of Chemistry” was written by Allan B. Comb. It begins by relating the process of petrochemical industries that extract chemicals from natural petroleum, such as gasoline and diesel. These are used to power our cars, planes and boats… There are other fuels such as methane, kerosene, butane propane and fuel oil. The Petrochemical industries also produces agricultural chemicals, plastic synthetic fibers and asphalt.
Another kind of chemistry is Metallurgy which involves metals. Metals are used in many different products. Metals have been useful because they can be bent, pounded, drawn, or cast into shapes. Different kinds of metals have their own special property and this determined how they can be used. One kind of metal that has his own property is aluminum. Aluminum is used in engine parts, structures of planes, soda cans and many more. Most metals undergo chemical reactions with other elements and become minerals. When metal is mixed with other elements it can be somehow difficult to find it. The act of trying to find metal is called prospecting, Prospecting can be done by using many techniques. In the past, prospectors used methods based on luck . While these methods sometimes worked finding metal was often due to luck or coincidence. Today, prospecting for metals or other minerals is based on scientific tools. One tool that we use is measuring variations in the magnetic or gravitational fields. The data is collected and carefully analyzed to locate mineral sources.
As you can see, the theme in this book is evolution because chemistry has brought tremendous changes on industrial, medical and agricultural fields. This informative book was well developed through the author use of information. The literary techniques are very simple, which made the book amazing and easy to read.

“ When you are sick, a physician might give you medicine to get you well again. That medicine will contain chemicals that have tested to help your body recover.” (Allan B. Comb#54) This book is related to medical research career because many medicines have been developed through a chemical process. Before in ancient Greece, a physician called Hippocrates gave patients a bitter powder derived from the bark of a willow tree to help cure headaches muscle aches, general pains and fevers. When scientists began to look at the natural medicine , such as willow barks, they found some basis of chemistry. Italian, French and German pharmacists gathered and found out that a special ingredient that is called salicylic acid helped wounds or injuries to recover. This ingredient is now days called aspirin and is still used by hospitals and other medal care.
“Linus Pauling’s long and remarkable career spanned many branches of science. Perhaps his most important scientific discovery was on the structures of molecules.” (Allan B. Comb#72) Chemistry is related to physical science because the study of chemistry is related to mechanics and molecules which is applied when using atoms and electrons. In this book “The basics of chemistry” One of the most important things I learned in this book was how in the past people treated headaches, muscle aches, general pains and fevers with a special medicine that we still use to help people recover. This information could hep us make a new kind of medicine that would cure any kind of pain or sickness in a human body without hurting or damaging the person who is sick.
I would recommend this book to middle schoolers because this book may help people in their projects or research because this book provides lots of information that may be helpful for a middle schooler to know. This book is really resourceful and makes people enjoy reading about chemistry. The theme Evolution teaches readers how people have been using chemistry to help cure sicknesses and to make human lives better. As one can see, The book “The Basics of Chemistry” is considered very resourceful and helpful.
