SOLVED Children's Book - Warsaw [s]

Was it The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier? When I visited Warsaw several years ago, I hunted for fiction set in Poland, and this is the only children's book I recall finding.

Agree with CLM - it sounds like the Silver Sword (apart from the illness bit)

"The Silver Sword" was also published under the name "Escape from Warsaw."

I remember really liking that book when I was a kid.
