Maybe you would like Popular Music from Vitulla by Mikael Niemi? It takes place in the northern part of Sweden, close to the Finnish border.

Holly (moonshiner) Per Petterson is a Norwegian writer who wrote the highly-acclaimed Out Stealing Horses. He has quite a few novels that have been translated into English.

I can read only English. It makes it complicated to find if books have been translated.

I started this one and then set it aside for now.
Maybe I will go back to it at some point. It's not quite what I am looking for.
