This is on the list of 1001 books to read--Salman Rushdie's first book. It is a mixture of science fiction and folk tale and got mixed reviews. I bought the Kindle ebook because our library system didn't have it.

The first 25% was pretty good: about a young Amerindian hermaphrodite who drinks a magic elixir and gains eternal life. After 777 years, he wants to end it all and learns of a way to reach another dimension. He is washed up on the shore of Calf Island and at this point the story gets pretty supernatural and is leaving me behind. Hoping I can hang in there to finish it.
Finished. I'm giving it 2.5 stars, mostly for imagination and style.
