Andy Love | 2074 comments This sounds like F. M. Busby's "All These Earths" All These Earths

http://www.risingshadow.net/library/b...
"Star pilot Woody Pearsall's return home to Earth had suddenly become a nightmare. His wife, his commander, even the base records all said he'd been dead for over five years. The Skip Drive which had made interstellar flight possible had an unexpected side effect – shifting him to an alternate Earth!"

Stig Vejlø | 2 comments thx but no, its not about earth, more a univers where when you go from one planet to another, you travel not just in space but also in dimention so when you get there they may or may not know you, or even at war with you.

"All These Earths" isn't really about Earth - it just starts there, when it's discovered that the new space-drive leads to accidental travel to alternate universe.

Andy Love | 2074 comments Another possibility is Nourse's "The Universe Between" in which space-travel is accomplished via brief travel through another universe - but it turns out than people don't always come out in the right universe. The Universe Between

Michele | 280 comments A longshot but The Number of the Beast? They hop to all sorts of dimensions at random, finding quite a few that are much different than they expected. They are able to keep track of which one is which though.
