ABANDONED. Fantasy - pre 2005 - Neighborhood transported to fantasy world with magic granting "relics"

I'm pretty sure I have the latest date set. I know I read this somewhere between 1998 and 2005, but I don't know when the book was released.

The plot as I remember is that there was a neighborhood/cul-de-sac that gets teleported to a fantasy world with magic. The main part of the book is that there is a bad(?) magician who is harrassing the people. The magic is provided by some relic/item. I think it's petrified dragon's eyes? Some stone of a dragon? Whatver it is, there are a few of them.
The more that you collect the more powerful you are.
At one point, one resident of the neighborhood gets one of the relics and (possibly) fights the magician.

The book is probably the first of a series. It ended before people returned to the real world. I don't think it was a YA book.
