Tasks
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the Appalachian Trail or simply the A.T., is a marked hiking trail in the Eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The trail is about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) long, though the exact length changes over time as parts are rerouted or modified. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy describes the Appalachian Trail as the longest hiking-only trail in the world. More than 2 million people are said to take a hike on part of the trail at least once each year.

🥾 1. Read a book where the Appalachian Trail is mentioned.
Give us a partial sentence and page/loc#.
🥾 2. Read a book where a character goes hiking.
🥾 3. Read a book whose title has words that begin with A and T.
🥾 4. Read a book with the letters HIKE (in any order) in the title.
🥾 5. Read a book from Best Books of the 20th Century.
🥾 6. Read a book with a 2 in the number of ratings.
🥾 7. Read a book from Best Appalachian Trail Books.

The trail was conceived by Benton MacKaye, a forester who wrote his original plan—called "An Appalachian Trail, A Project in Regional Planning"—shortly after the death of his wife in 1921. MacKaye's idea detailed a grand trail that would connect a series of farms and wilderness work/study camps for city-dwellers along the Appalachian Mountains from the highest point in the North (Mt. Washington in New Hampshire) to the highest in the South (Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina). Hiking was an incidental focus of his plan. In 1922, at the suggestion of Major William A. Welch, director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, his idea was publicized by Raymond H. Torrey with a story in the New York Evening Post under a full-page banner headline reading "A Great Trail from Maine to Georgia!"
🥾 8. Read a book where a spouse dies.
🥾 9. Read a book where something is publicized. Tell us what.
🥾 10. Read a book with the name of a place or state in the title.
🥾 11. Read a book with the word MOUNTAIN in the title.
🥾 12. Read a book by an author whose first or last name begins with M or T.
🥾 13. Read a book set in the mountains.

On October 7, 1923, the first section of the trail, from Bear Mountain west through Harriman State Park to Arden, New York, was opened.
🥾 14. Read a book published in October of any year.
🥾 15. Read a Series #1. Tell us the series name.
🥾 16. Read a book where a person travels to the west.
Ex. They go from New York to Ohio or from Italy to England.

In 1936, a 121-day Maine to Georgia veteran's group funded and supported thru-hike was reported to have been completed, with all but three miles of the new trail cleared and blazed, by six Boy Scouts from New York City and their guides. The completed thru-hike was much later recorded and accepted by the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association.
🥾 17. Read a book where a character is a Boy Scout. Tell us who.

In 1938, the trail sustained major damage from a hurricane that went through the New England area. This happened right before the start of World War II and many of the people working on the trail were called to active duty.
🥾 18. Read a book where a hurricane occurs.

In 1948, Earl Shaffer of York, Pennsylvania, brought a great deal of attention to the project by publicizing the first claimed thru-hike. The claim was later criticized for the hike's omission of significant portions due to short-cuts and car rides. Shaffer later claimed the first north-to-south thru-hike, the first to claim to do so in each direction. Chester Dziengielewski was later to be named the first south bound thru-hiker. In 1998, Shaffer, nearly 80 years old, hiked the trail, making him the oldest person to claim a completed thru-hike.

The first woman to walk the trail in a single season was Peace Pilgrim in 1952, while the first solo woman to complete the hike was 67-year old Emma Gatewood who completed the northbound trek in 1955, taking 146 days. She repeated the achievement two years later, and again in 1963, at age 75.

🥾 19. Read a book with an elderly character, male or female.
🥾 20. Read a book where a character has the same first and last initial. Tell us their name.
🥾 21. Read a book set in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s or 1990s.

Barb | 1249 comments When I was in high school, my Girl Scout troop spent a week hiking part of the Appalachian Trail here in PA, so I'm not sure I can resist this challenge, and may be back to sign up for it :)

I just read online this morning that the AT Conservancy has asked hikers to "forgo" the Trail this year due to covid. When everyone started looking for things to do outdoors last year, a LOT more people than usual headed to the AT to hike. Since their shelters, etc. are not set up for social distancing -- and forget about frequent handwashing! -- they're asking people to stay away for now. Wonder how many will?

Hot Springs, NC is a popular stopping point on the trail. Several weeks ago, the entire town (which is really small, but even so) was closed down to tourists and hikers until the COVID numbers came under control. Things like that will impede the long hikers...

We only went up to the mountains once - Blowing Rock - while we lived in Concord. Here in PA the mountains are just a few miles away.

We lived in Boone while my folks went to App and then I got both my Bachelor's and Masters' degrees there, so I know that area well. I'm actually in the foothills now, so I can be in the mountains in an hour. I've visited some of the PA mountains as well, and they are beautiful.

✔ 18. Read a book where a hurricane occurs. Saving Shadows by Kathleen Brooks 5* 3/7
