Franu Vd | 4 comments Hi!! Im Francesca from Argentina. I read Frankenstein in the beginning of 2020 and absolutely loved it. Until recently, however, I payed no mind to classics, but a sudden interest in them emerged. I now have started Jane Eyre, and acquired The Picture of Dorian Gray and Far from the Madding Crowd. Im really excited to dive into them, and many more hopefully!

Pauline | 3 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Pauline and I'm from Germany. I have always been a huge reader but would mainly read Fantasy. While I still love reading Fantasy I started to read more diverse around 2018 and that also included classics.

Some classics I enjoyed are

"Dear Daddy Long Legs" and "Dear Enemy" by Jean Webster
"Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier
"We have always lived in this castle" by Shirley Jackson
"Peter Pan" by J.M. Barrie

I read Rebecca for the first time this year in January. And I loved it!!! What did you think of it? Have you seen the 1940 movie version and/or the Netflix version movie? I have only seen the 1940 movie and loved it, but also hope to watch the Netflix version, maybe this weekend. :)

I loved it as well! Very atmospheric and one of my first explorations into the gothic genre. It was also my first book by DuMaurier and it definetly made me want to read more by her (although so far I only read her Shortstroy "The Birds". There are just too many books and not enough time). I watched the Hitchcock one right after I finished the book and really enjoeyd it. I watched the Netflix Version last October and I thought it was alright. It was good for a fun movie night with the family and I do like Lily James as an actress. Plus, in some aspects they stayed truer to the book which I appreciated but I think Hitchcock captured the atmosphere better.

I also agree there are too many books and not enough time, but that's not a bad problem to have. :) I'm probably not going to read The Birds as I saw the movie a few years ago and found it too scary for me. My adult children and I watched both versions and liked both of them, but really favored the Hitchcock movie more because, as you said, it captured the atmosphere much better and also like you, I like Lily James as an actress and we all recognized her as being Rose from Downton Abbey which we all love. :)

Hi Janice, I love the Russian classics, Jane Austen, The Brontes, Sherlock Holmes and many others. Thomas Hardy is a particular favourite author. I'm currently reading (for the second time) Moby Dick. Actually I'm listening to a wonderful audiobook, narrated superbly by William Hootkins and following along in the book. I'd like to read more Shakespeare and short stories, as well. I'm truly looking forward to reading the selections for April to September. The only one I've read is The Time Machine by H. G. Wells. Happy reading to all!

I have only read one Russian classic so far and that was the short story collection in the book Gooseberries. It wasn't for me, but that won't stop me from reading other Russian authors. I would like to read Dr. Zhivago, The Nose, A School for Fools, and Childhood, Boyhood, Youth to name a few. What is a favourite author(s)/book(s) that you love? I also love Jane Austen, my favourite is Pride and Prejudice What is your favorite Jane Austen book(s)? I'm reading [book:Jane Eyre for the first time right now and am loving it!!! I have only read one other Bronte novel, Agnes Grey, and love it too!!! I'm thinking I may love the Brontes after all. I am thinking of reading Wuthering Heights, Agnès Grey & Villette at some point. I have only read two Sherlock Holmes books so far and really enjoyed them especially The Hound of the Baskervilles. I thought it would be too scary for me as I don't like horror, but it was fine and a great read. I plan on reading more of the Sherlock Holmes books. I have never read any of Thomas Hardy books yet, but have many listed on my TBR list. I also like many other authors, too many to list. :) There are some wonderful books listed to read this year. :)

Hi, Leanne, and welcome to the group. :) I have never read Vanity Fair, but have it on my TBR list. I have wanted to read it ever since watching the movie Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon in 2004. I don't know why I haven't read it yet?! :)

Welcome to the group, Tammie. :) My daughter has read Dracula and enjoyed it. I can't see myself reading it as I think it will be too scary for me, but who knows. I am reading Jane Eyre right now and I thought it would be too scary for me after seeing a 1935 movie of it quite a few years ago. By the way, I am really enjoying the book Jane Eyre. :)

Reading is my passion and what I spend most of my time doing when I’m not studying. I would love to read more classics, perhaps some of the lesser known ones.

Taya | 3 comments Hello everyone! I’m Taya, a high schooler in Canada. I’m still a newbie to classics, but I absolutely love the Victorian era so far. My favourite classics are “Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux and “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë. I’m also a violinist, pianist, and polyglot, so I greatly enjoy books that incorporate music and old English into them.

Always glad to meet a science person. Curious what you think of Dostoyevsky when you're finished.
