They were awful men just in different ways. Neither had empathy or any sort of conscience. That scene with the kitten made me cringe. I thought that Kim would probably rescue the girls but the emotional torture that they were put through was disturbing.

I get that its purpose was to show just how far Symes would go in his desire to cause pain, but I agree that it was disturbing.
Symes was so scary. As Lisa mentioned, I figured Kim would rescue the girls, but I wondered if they would be okay emotionally when this was all over.
It did two things for me: scared me witless, filling me with constant worry for those girls. I had no idea if they’d survive. The second thing it did was give me insight about how these children would be forever changed. They had no preparation for evil and then had to live it in the worst way. They’ll definitely need help.
