So far I have only read the Civil War series. I love the way Altsheler wrote the story of the battle at Gettysburg and the scene of Lee's surrender. Altsheler's stories make the war so much more real and personal, especially when compared to history books and documentaries, but his stories are still based on his interviews of Civil War veterans and his research as a trained journalist.

Michele | 3 comments I seriously need to look into these books! My boyfriend is a Civil War buff and these sound like a great way for me to understand more about that war.

Definitely. They are still all available free on Project Gutenberg, which is where I read them. He wrote lots of other books too that are also on that site, which I plan to read soon.
