This month's pick was a book of poetry which isn't everyone's cup of tea. A lot of times people will groan if you start talking about poetry but everyone seems to have at least one poem (or a bit of a poem) they can quote.

When I was going to high school we had to memorize a poem every year for prize speaking contests and to this day I can still recite bits and pieces of the poems.

Do you have a favorite poem you remember? Please share.

In fact, tonight was one of the livelier discussions we've had since I've taken over. Angelou's poetry comes from her experience as a black woman, but was general enough that everyone was able to connect with it.

My favorite poet is William Carlos Williams. He's best known for his short, imagist poems, though his longer pieces (specifically "Paterson") are excellent.

One that I think of often is his poem "This is just to say":

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

My wife and I will often leave variations of this for each other. My favorite being:

This is Just to Say

I have eaten
the leftover taco meat
that was in
the refrigerator

and which
you were probably
for a breakfast burrito

Forgive me
it was delicious
so spicy
with sourcream

Dorothy (doky) | 17 comments I've neglected poetry for years (shame on me) though I loved it for an equal number of years... One that's easy to remember and comes to mind rather too often is Dorothy Parker's:

“In youth, it was a way I had,
To do my best to please.
And change, with every passing lad
To suit his theories.

But now I know the things I know
And do the things I do,
And if you do not like me so,
To hell, my love, with you.”
