Johanne *the biblionaut* | 976 comments This is the third in a children's book series (for 10-13 year olds-ish) about shape shifters in the US, written by a German, not translated to English. My 11-year old son and I find this quite funny. I read them in Danish, my German is not that strong.

Anyway it's a really good series and a solid 3½ stars. The main reason I don't rate it higher is because after reading a lot of middle grade/ YA fantasy I have a low tolerance for children, whether they be shapeshifters, heroes, magicians or whatever, that go off thinking they can fix everything on their own, even though they have friends and adults to confide in. Looking at you Harry Potter. At least the main character, Carag, is not as bad as HP.

Carag, a puma shifter, attends a school for shifters, or woodwalkers as they're called in these books. His best friends are Brandon, a bison shifter, and Holly, a squirrel shifter. It's a continuing story line with an adult puma shifter who wants to take revenge on humans for destroying the woodwalkers' and animals' habitats. Carag and the others agree on this, but it's the "no matter the cost" and the revenge part Carag and his friends doesn't like, and why he said no to being the crown prince to the other puma's ploy in a previous book. In this book one of the evil puma's henchmen almost kills Carag and some of his friends.
Mixed with the action is life at school and we hear about the different shifters and their lessons in "socialising with humans" etc, and the friendships, love interests and more. In this book, Holly gets a new human ward, who doesn't want her to attend the school anymore (he's human and obviously doesn't know about the school's curriculum). At the same time her scent is outside the town's bank, that's just been robbed. What is Holly's secret? It's nothing too bad, don't worry.

This is a series fans of Warrior Cats (Into the Wild) and Magisterium (The Iron Trial) will like.

It's shelved "c-animals" and "tiere", which means animals in German.
