Listened to an interview on NPR in 2018 I think. A Fictional book about a 50's or 60's radio talk show host having a mental breakdown of some sort. Written by a fairly popular writer but was one of his least popular and least critically acclaimed books.

Thank you for the posts. Unfortunately this is not the book. I figured it would be easier to find seeing as how it was on npr, but it's really difficult.
